I've fired tens of thousands of rounds through various M134 miniguns, usually from aerial platforms but also ground configurations, but I have not (yet) fired one through the pop-up roof hatch... maybe in a few weeks when I go back to Dillon Aero in early December...

If you are serious about this the first thing I would tackle would be making a roll cage for the car because in my opinion the roof of a 3rd gen is not at all sturdy enough to mount a machine gun. Especially after you cut a hatch in it.
All vehicle mounted guns I have used have been mounted to a heavy duty framework and I would guess that is a necessity. Whenever operating out of a non armored passenger vehicle similar to the 4runner its best to use a squad automatic platform resting on the door frame. Hope this helps.

what are you working with, i.e. tell us what specific machine gun you intend to mount?
belt-fed?
how much ammo do you need to carry?
do you have a large ammo can? how close does it need to be to your machine gun?
feed chute?
do you have any external power requirements, e.g. solenoids, motor for your ammo feeding system?
where and how far does your machine gun eject brass? disintegrating links?

If I cut a hole in the ceiling in the cargo area, could I use a first gen roll bar as the base for the mount? Would that be sturdy enough?
If I took a sawzall to the ceiling, would there be anything I'd have to watch out for? What about a hatch to cover the hole, and hide the mount when I take the gun off it's mount?

I like the first gen roll bar idea, just need to have a swivel mount on top of that. I'd say go with an M60

do you have a post 86 weapon? or do you have a 07/02 or a form4? or a are you a FFL dealer? can you legally own a class II weapon?
if the answer to any of those questions is now or idk, then you are wasting your time and everyone elses time with this thread... oh and even if you do have the certs to own or possess one(which i highly doubt because you are posing this question) it is highly illegal to mount said operable weapon to a vehicle. im not even sure how you would go about registering said vehicle or getting authorization for such a vehicle.
