MT's worst handling cars

Is it a surprise to you that most buyers of the 5th gen aren't buying it for its offroad ability? Have you failed to notice that the 4Runner gets bigger, more luxurious, and less suited to real off-road every generation?

I thought one of the biggest complaint of the 5th gen was all the decontenting?

My SR5 is not in the list, only Trail got in 10 worst lol. Wondering what vehicles they've tested before they came up with the article.

Have you failed to notice that the 4Runner gets bigger, more luxurious, and less suited to real off-road every generation? Offroaders aren't the segment the 4Runner is being marketed to. Motor Trend knows this, and is writing articles that categorize the vehicles people are buying by the qualities they want in those vehicles.

Let's face it, 99.9% of 5th gen owners would happily sacrifice its offroad qualities for better handling and a softer ride, and the 6th gen truck will move even farther towards making those prospective buyers happy. We're just lucky that Toyota is even nodding in our direction by (so far) leaving things like body on frame, solid rear axles, and low range on the table.

Agreed. That's why I kept my 97Runner if I want to go off-road and the reason I bought my 5th gen for the comfort.

The SR5 isn't even on their radar. ;)

Anyways, take an M3 or Porsche on an off road track and will see who's the worst handling car.

It would be nice if the article had a link back to the original test vehicles performance and any article that had previously been written. It is what they call citing your sources....:flipoff:

Anyway, I would like to know if the test trail had KDSS. :keyboard:

I think it must not have, because while my truck with KDSS was not great it wasn't super-duper horrible. Certainly it was not great. :sobbing:My last car was an 05 mustang gt and it handled pretty well. Now with my icon suspension it is better than stock, but despite my attempts, I never get a delusion of being in a sports car on the highway off-ramp:boink:

Yes, load Porsche or M3 with camping gear, load 2 kayaks on the rooof and bikes on the hitch, put it on old logging road and then we'll see who's handling is better: )

What I don't understand is I have scrolled up and down that link for 10 minutes, I don't see the 4runner on any of the numbers 1-10.

Did they just put up the picture with out including it on the list, I'm insulted lol.

I did the same thing and then found it mentioned in number 10 in comparison with the Honda CR-Z EX CVT. Seems like a strange comparison - I guess they had the same time on the track, but still...

The very first listing is a tie between the CR-Z and 4Runner. I missed it on the first pass as well.

Do we really care what MT or anyone else thinks about our 4Rs? Speaking for myself, I sure don't. Similarly, if I had taken to heart every negative article, "evaluation" or comment I've come across about Jeep Wranglers over the years I would have missed out on years of trouble free, top down, doors off, pure unadulterated fun! I hope to have the same experience with my "poor handling" TE.

you guys are totally dropping the ball here. right in the article it says "take this with a grain of salt"

and also to compare a supposedly sporty reincarnation of the popular CR-X to a body on frame 4x4 and return the same skid pad data. you guys should be proud of that regardless of what the article says.

To compare apple's to apple's the Jeep Grand Cherokee results placed it at about #3, so at least we beat the JGC!

Well said.

Me neither, but I feel that I possess the requisite experience and maturity to conduct research on my vehicles PRIOR to purchase. Not everybody does. Just like the mainstream media and our current government administration right now. According to our current president, the "private sector" is doing fine. Really? So with a heavy dose of disinformation a tide of falsehoods can be pushed on the populace. Folks like us, who drive these vehicles, know their capabilities.

I actually thought it was funny. It seems like they put the 4runner in a tie with the little compact not to make it look bad, but to make it painfully obvious how terrible the little hybrid handled.

The whole article is clearly for entertainment purposes because most people who buy those vehicles aren't necessarily in the performance(on the street at least) oriented markets.

Good find, thanks for sharing!
