Music Beat Maker Ideas

My 13yo nephew has recently gotten into the idea of making music beat. Specifically old school hip-hop style stuff (which is music to my ears). He was asking me if I knew of anything that would be able to do that. Anyone with ideas? I have no clue when it comes to something like that outside of the old TR 808. It would be something outside of a computer program.
