not trying to be rude here, but getting rear ended is not considered considerate either.
the accident was cause by someone making a left turn and was 1/2 in the center turn lane and 1/2 in the left driving lane. i couldnt go around the minivan and traffic was going by me on the right driving lane, so i had to stop. this lady rear ended me due to her not noticing my vehicle was stopped.
needless to say, i would have preferred not being rear ended and the other person would have preferred to no rear end me either. w/o the hitch i would have $2000+ damage across the whole rear end and she would have had more damage across the whole front end instead of just the hood and radiator.
but to each there own.

I understand how you want to protect yourself from careless drivers.
However, it's not *always* the person-behind's fault when there is a rear ended accident. For example, when a car cuts close in front of another car then brake to a complete stop, that would be the front driver's fault. It happened to a person I know and the front driver received a ticket and was at 100% fault.
Not saying that you're the one who cuts people off, but there's always a possibility that you are at fault even tho you were being rear ended. There's really no "it would never happen to me". In such cases, it would cause $1000's of unnecessary damage to the innocent driver behind.

you are right, it depends on the situation and circumstances. in my case i was not at fault and the hitch saved me fustration of having to drive my wife to work due to 1 less vehicle. in your friend's case, it would have caused him more problems due to more damage.
but its 50/50 chance everytime we go out driving and its part of owning a vehicle that no one can escape. we as owners have to balance this risk everyday, i just tend to do it in a different way than you.
good example is the car chase video's on tv, innocent people get T-boned, pushed, etc. and nothing they could have done would have made it any more/less.

You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that.
However I do need to correct the misinformation -- even in CA, it's not always the fault of the person who rear ends into the car in front. One example would be the stopping distance being abruptly decreased by another vehicle. Don't try to learn this the hard way.
In addition, it is illegal to have object extends pass the overall dimension of the vehicle. This is usually defined as front bumper to rear bumper, and side mirror to side mirror. You can check with your local authorities about this. The only exception would be for cars that carry a different kind of registration (snow plower, construction vehicle, etc.); or in case of trailering, since the trailer is rolling on the ground on its wheels, it would need a plate and registration by itself. So by having a draw attached to the tow vehicle while not in used is considered unsafe and inappropriate by the law.

With respect to leaving the receiver and ball in place, I say go for it. I've had my 92 pickup rear-ended twice. It sux. Just be careful when walking around the back of the truck. Those things really smart when they catch you in the shin.

Nothing was blown of proportion. Only you were taking it the wrong way.
Who here can be 100% confident to say that they have perfect visibility when backing up? How do you like having a hitchball punching a big fat dent on your hood or puncturing the grill by others who have a hitch sticking out and backing up?

lol, i dont think anyone likes to exp. -40+F ambient temps. heck when it gets that cold even vehicles with engine block warmers dont start sometimes.
last time ga exp. any kind of decent winter was back in the early 70's. i remember when i was a kid, columbus had like 12 or 16 inches of snow one day. my dad took pics before i went out in the back yard and put footprints all over the place.
only thing i miss the most from ga is the sweetened tea and country's bbq in columbus. sucks being up north and having to add sugar to my tea all the time.
last time ga exp. any kind of decent winter was back in the early 70's. i remember when i was a kid, columbus had like 12 or 16 inches of snow one day. my dad took pics before i went out in the back yard and put footprints all over the place.
only thing i miss the most from ga is the sweetened tea and country's bbq in columbus. sucks being up north and having to add sugar to my tea all the time.

But anyway, nice looking ride. I was hoping we had a good snow this week. I wanted to play in the snow with my 4Runner, but as usual, nothing worth mentioning.
