my slow build/wheeling/everything thread.

oh, one more thing, I contacted billavista and asked for a review on the T-locker, since it had been several years since he installed it.

he said no issues, and it was still working great, he loved it. also something about that he had bashed the front diff enough time that it cracked and had a slight leak, but the locker was unaffected and still worked perfectly.

im sold, I only wish they still made it, so I could get one for the rear. id much prefer it over an ARB....

Yeah buddy!!

these things are huge!

interestingly enough though, they measure out right at 40". that's un-mounted of course. I expect them to grow a bit once aired up. while my worn out 38.5" measure out to 36". that is aired up to around 10psi, and on the truck.
even still, they are a LOT bigger than the old tires.

having that extra clearance while aired down is going to be awesome!

Ive been busy, and haven't gotten anything done on the truck. however I DID get it down here to the shop, and got it parked in the corner. that's something...

Im just going to post some tech here, measurements and such, so I have a record of things.

im currently using an 87 rear housing,

WMS: 58.5" according to Erik's Toyota Differential info

bulge to bulge 78"
that's with 38.5x14.50 SX's.
10" wheel with 3.25" BS(measured), with weld on bead locks. the bead locks add about 1" per side to the overall width.

the D60 im building will be at 63" WMS

I plan to use a 9.75" wheel, with a 4.5 BS.
this wheel will be a regular bead lock, so no added width for that.
this combo should put me about 77.5" bulge to bulge.

I could easily go with a 4", or 4.25" BS wheel to get just a bit more width, back to where I am now, or just slightly wider. perfect!

took the 85 runner up to scout a bit for hunting next month. no trails really, just some old logging roads.

still managed to do this.

I don't have a spare...
luckily the other guy that was with us had a compressor, and was able to air it up. we had to air it up every 10 minutes until the stick came out. oddly enough, it leaked much more slowly after it came out.

we had to air it up 4 times, to make it about 30 miles.

Need to carry a plug kit! Saved my butt many times.

Hyde - plug kit and butt should NEVER be used in the same post. EVER!

However Hyde is correct - a "Tire Repair Kit" is cheap insurance. Along with an airpump (Slime is a nice cheap emergency air pump)

ive thought about getting one many times, just never did it. this is the first flat ive ever had. well, I guess the 2nd, but the other one happened as I pulled into the driveway. this is the first time ever getting a flat out on the road somewhere, away from home.

I will probably pick up a basic plug kit. it would have been nice to have, we could have finished our day, instead of hauling ass home.

I now have this.

I got a full box of plugs from a tire shop, 60 for $20. I also got 3 plug tools, and 3 bottles of rubber cement from CARQUEST for about $35. Enough to give each of guys i wheel with a plug kit also.

just because...

im still waiting on wheels, im hoping to get them some time this week.

I did however discover that my electric fan controller is bad. I had previously thought it was just the relay, a few months ago I changed it, it seemed to be working correctly. I started it this morning, and no such luck. the fan did decide to come on randomly much later, as I was looking up a replacement controller...

so this will be going on soon.

with the proper adapter bushing.

IMG_0422_zpse23001d2.jpg~original

and the wiring diagram, in case I ever need it. no access once its mounted, since its on the back...

IMG_0425_zps39fa1b4c.jpg~original

this should be a better controller than the previous one. as it plumbs directly into a water jacket, and doesn't just have a probe you stab into the radiator fins like the other one.

while im waiting for wheels, ive been working on the 60. I stripped it down a few weeks ago. since then, ive been trying to get the kingpins out. WHAT A JOB!

but, I finally got them out!

IMG_0449_zpsaefd95b6.jpg

by doing this,

IMG_0448_zpsdd00b105.jpg~original

with a die grinder, cut a slice as close to the knuckle as you can get. this will relieve the tension, and allow the kingpin to come out.
in that pic you can also see the pitting and wear, they needed changed...

even with that, I still had to use the BIG GUN.

I don't have a 7/8" hex tool, so I improvised!

IMG_0446_zpsb23ad86a.jpg~original

I think I will probably buy the correct tool for the install. these things require MASSIVE torque. im not sure my homemade tool would survive.

I finally got the new fan controller wired in. started the truck, let it warm up.
NOTHING. still no fan, WTF! I wired the "AC" output to a manual switch, and mounted a light inside, so I would know when the fan is running. flipping that switch turns the light on, but still no fan.

after rechecking my wiring, I hear SNAP, see a small spark and the fan comes on. HMM.

a bad connection AT the fan. SONOFA! I think the old controller was perfectly fine. damnit.

I just don't understand why it didn't work....

I decided im not going to have THAT problem again. got a few new parts.

that should work nicely. a nice waterproof connector. cheap, and easy. :D

I also had this little guy made up. its an adapter to install the OE temperature sensor into the ford block.

so now my factory dash temp gauge works, and reads correctly.

went on another scouting trip on sunday. we set up our camp, and did some scouting. played with some elk calls, and talked with a big bull for a while. it was pretty cool.

my very basic camp. :D

also, these 2 pics I think just about double the pics I have of my 4runner....lame. haha.

a couple deer I spotted while we were scouting an old logging road.
IMG_0468_zps7087d587.jpg~original

a grouse, on that same road.

my check engine light came on about 30 minutes before I saw those deer...

the light came on for about 30 seconds, then went off. it never came on again. no change it how it ran.

im ASSuming its for the O2 sensor but I haven't checked the codes yet.
I cant remember, do these store codes?

I changed the O2 sensor once many years ago. it seems I remember it doing the same thing, the light going off after a few seconds. im thinking i tried pulling the codes back then, and not getting anything, because the light was off..
