My tube bumpers from local guy starting up

I had these done by a local guy who is getting a fabrication business going. He is kinda bouncing around right now with different offroad work, one off jobs, ect. I figure a positive response to these bumpers would yield interest and maybe help him focus more on the 3rd gen parts.

I got both bumpers, sliders welded on, paint, and lunch for 1k.

He is in SW Washington/Oregon border. He just told me he is 2 months behind already with all the other crap hes doing. As I said though, a good amount of interest might help him decide to get these going/shipping them out.

I'm happy with them. The hammered finish paint really surprised me at it's toughness. It also laid down and covered VERY well on the first coat and each following coat. $5 a can at Shitmart.

No hitch for the rear bumper? It also doesn't contour to the shape of the wheel well towards the front.
Also, the stitch spacing on the front bumper winch fascia doesn't look very strong. I'd imagine that pulling at an off angle, stressing the roller fairleads could possibly damage that portion...
This is just me being constructively critical, hopefully he can improve on these designs and put out an even better product!

I opted not to have a hitch on the back, I have a cummins if I need something pulled.

Are you in the Longview area? Or WAY Southwest like Ilwaco/Longbeach?

Could you post a picture of the 4Runner STRAIGHT on from the side, and from a lower perspective, perhaps a bit further away than the last picture?

Basically if we could get a STRAIGHT on shot from the front and rear taken from the level of the bumper, I think it'd really help.

To me they look kinda unfinished at the edges (mostly due to how the just end so abruptly without any contour to the wheel well), but I do think that with some constructive criticism they could be sweet.

This is the type of image I am intertested in, but maybe a bit further away...

It looks really weak to be honest.
It was done semi clean and looks good for a mall crawler but it has no gussets and a pipe to pipe weld is not high strength.

I think they look kinda different and cool. Also take what these guys say with a grain of salt, it's hard to judge a bumper's build quality and construction from one photo online. Not my style, but anything that sets you apart from the crowd is a good thing IMO. And they will definitely offer more protection than the factory tin cans bumpers.

My only criticism would be approach angle. I'd move the front recovery points higher up and maybe try to tuck the bumper in closer to the grille.

Right, I didn't purchase these to go beat the shit out of my truck. Sure, I'm probably in the minority for these style bumpers with that mentality, however he has people doing just that already.

He took the criticism well it seemed. Dude is busting his ass like 90 hours a week trying to get things going and make a buck in life. He wants to make people happy though so the rear bumper contour stuff will be addressed in the future. I had actually asked about that when I got my bumper as well.

I'm going to go play offroad this weekend. If it falls off I'll update :typing:

He is aware of this thread. Any criticism/constructive comments that are reasonable as a broad improvement will be adjusted. I am going to be in contact with him to adapt my rear bumper wraps for example.

I'm just a "poser" mainly with this truck anyway, I like what I like for looks. I'm blunt though, I beat the PISS out of the car's I've built, but I respect the built garage queens all the same.

I like the look of the front a lot. I would move the recovery points in a little like said Whitenslow said and it might benefit from some strengthening in some key places. But from the picture, i do like it.

The rear in my opinion is a little too low for my liking. I would say it needs to hug the body a little better and be tucked up a little higher.

Overall for someone just starting out, its a damn good job. I can tell you my 1st attempt looks nowhere near as good.

Those look pretty nice to me. Personally, I love tube bumpers over plate, and as a full time fabricator, I can say I'd have no problem with those. A close up of the sliders and how they're mounted would be nice. Tell him at least somebody says they look good AND functional.

Thanks man. It's funny, I've had a few people compliment them in private. I guess for the most part people have only been brave enough to say they need this or that changed.

I'll get some pics of the sliders for you when it's a bit less wet outside haha. They are welded with 3 plates attaching to the frame. I'm way more of a hotrod guy then a "wheeler". Like I said, I'm just a poser with these anyways, but I've had people who knew what they were seeing, and nobody has laughed in person.

Cummins, yeah, I got mine right at the tail end of my car/truck hoarding spree I went through. 101k miles, 06 mega cab, 5.9 of course, got it for 18k at a Ford dealer. They somehow, didn't know what they had, it was an awfulmatic but dug into it and turned out to have a built trans. So now it has a few extra's, Smarty tuner, 5" exhaust, ect. If only the front end compared to the powerplant it would be the perfect truck :cheers:

That, or I'll touch base with him and try to get him registered on here. He has/may be reading this periodically anyways. It's nice to help out people who work hard to make people happy. I had a similar initial run swingarms built for my dune quads a few years back.

Ended up doing a group buy and organizing the deal and the guy sold over 60 custom swingarms and his whole business blew up.

Right on, looks like fun. I purchased a built Comanche for wheeling I don't do, restoring a 69 SS Camaro and I built a foxbody about 5 years ago now. Made 1038 whp on race and 890 on pump. Can't seem to kick the car habit, I also built a dune 450R and Raptor 700R (now stroked/bigbore 996).

Someday when I have more free cash/the 4runner is finished, I'll tinker with it again. I barely was able to pay mine off and now it just sit's unless I make money with it. The diesel that is.

I did a small lift and wheels/tires on mine. It's just kinda too much for a daily or I probably wouldn't have got anything different.
