I must be loosing it, but for some reason I can't figure out how to either a) get the entire wiper blade removed from the wiper arm or b) release the rubber insert/metal frame from the blade. I have the new rubber inserts. I've easily removed blades from all kinds of arms in the past (both the hook type as on the fifth gen, and the other types). Any tips/guidance/lessons learned? Thanks!

Hi NMJack,
You didn't post any pics of your old/new wipers or give a brand name; which would have been helpful... In that case I'll advise you this way: Remove the old blade assemblies from the wiper arms (one at a time). Now compare the new with the old ones; the new ones come with an assortment of fasteners to match the hardware assembly coming off. Choose which hardware that most closely match the old ones, re-assemble the blade cartridges with the new ones, using the old units to model the proper assembly... and that's it. It's not hard, just a bunch of extra pieces of hdwr that can't be used in this case; which is what the manufacturer intended. Rgds

I had the same problem, and felt like an idiot. I was trying to do it in a somewhat dark garage. Try this, get up onto a stool so you can see better. I was able to figure it out after that. Take a close look and see how the plastic differs from the metal. You'll be able to figure it out and it will practically fall off in your hand.
Thanks folks. I bought just the replacement Toyota rubber inserts (OEM), so will be reusing all other original components. My main problem is that with just my (fat) fingers, I can't seem to get to the release on the blade to allow it to slide off of the U-shaped end of the wiper arm. The fifth gen wiper blades do no rotate more than 10 - 20 degrees to allow ready access (some other makes can rotate to 90 degrees or more). I hesitate to start sticking a screw driver in there, but I don't know how else to get it released.

Who would have thought! I watched youtube videos and even found an instruction sheet on the Toyota website. No mention of the hinged tab. I just tried it and now don't feel nearly as stupid, just previously ignorant. Thanks!!! I just retired yesterday after 33 years and was starting to think that my brain was already shutting down.
