Need to start thinking of new muffler options....suggestions?

I need to start thinking about replacing my muffler. I like the sound/tone of the OEM and since my truck spent the first half of its life in the northeast the exhaust is pretty rusty so I'd like to replace from the cat back.

OEM is $600 from one of the online discount toyota parts sites.
Borla is $667 and JBA is $374 from Andy's auto.

The safe bet for me is the OEM but $600 is pretty steep when all I really need is a muffler to get the noise level down and just let the old rusty tailpipe stay in place.

If I do get just a muffler the OEM comes with a section of exhaust pipe for a total price of $400ish. Are there any quality mufflers out there that don't have a drone to them? I had a Borla once and it was horrible...not sure what type it was so maybe they aren't all bad.

I'd suggest a 18" BAMuffler from dirtydeeds look em up good price and sound great with zero drone.

If you go with any aftermarket "performance" mufflers then you will want it to have at least a 24" long case. Otherwise, it will be obnoxiously loud. I've heard good things about JBA. I plan on ordering one soon.

I have a magnaflow. 20" casing standard diameter and it has a pretty decent drone around town. Can't hear it on the highway over wind/tires. Doesn't bother me but you might not like it.

I have the Borla cat back and I don't find it too droney. I drove around with a split factory muffler for 2 months while I waited for it though so it sounded pretty quiet after that. I also don't really go on the highway either so can't comment on what it might be like on a 4hr highway trip...

Considered the JBA, but my parts guy (who is a friend, not just a salesman) told me the build quality on the Borla vs the JBA was worth the extra cash.

I went to my local TMA ( Tire,Muffler and Automotive ) got a replacement muffler for $85.00. It was louder than the oem, so he installed a resonator tip on the tailpipe and it's right back to the original tone. Tip was $25.00

Magnaflow 18". Great tone at lowish speed and minimal drone on the highway. Makes you feel like you have a little more power behind you. It's a fun muffler.

I didn't do a cat back. I just had the old muffler cut out, and the new one welded in it's place. I went with a Borla XR-1 12" case/18" overall. She's a bit loud.


Sometimes I think it sounds awesome.. sometimes not. I noticed a small leak in one of their welds (my bad for taking it to Midas for the work).. not sure if that's attributing to it or not sounding its best.

Liny4Runner has/had the same one on his 4Runner and it sounds amazing. It's the reason I bought mine. He has video on YouTube of it.

I don't think I really notice a drone with it.

Ive put those in my list of possibilities and saved them in my cart. Good price but I don't know anything about the brand.
