Needs some info/opinions on my 93 4R

Maybe not...just started the runner and it's idling like crap. Is resetting ecu necessary then? Pull neg batt and do somthing with headlights?

Hey guys. OK..replaced the mast for my auto antenna because it was all broken up inside. Had to take it out, take the motor apart and remove all the broken parts. Now the antenna goes up and down just fine but when going up it will continue to grind afer fully extended. Going down you can hear the motor click off when it gets down all the way. So..I am just wanting to replace it with a whip..anyone do this? I think I read you can get one from a Taco and put on there...comments?

most people just pull the auto antenna and put in a regular antenna. Because it's better and you don't have to worry about bashing it on some twig and busting it all to hell... again... Just my .02

yea, was doing more research since I have more time at work this week..looks like I messed up by going cheap on ebay and getting a crappy mast..good one is $20 vs finding parts for the Taco whip mod..guessing I'll replace the mast with the better one and then keep an eye out for the a Taco mast assembly.

Said it in another thread I started but putting here for posterity and contribute to my build...blew the head gasket. No water in the oil, thankfully. I think I got it pretty early. Smelled something burning on way home from work, got home and started the truck 20 mins later and it was rough. White smoke started pouring out of tailpipe and you could smell the radiator fluid in the steam. We are gonna tow it to a buddies house to begin the tear down. Heads will get re-surfaced on Monday, parts should be here by Tuesday so should be running again by late next week.
Just ordered new gasket set, bolts, timing belt, and water pump from Rockauto.
Got my new weekend project and blew my TG rock sliders funds all at once.
Can't believe the shop charges $2000 for this job..blown head gaskets on this engine really is a catastrophic event if you don't have any mechanic skills or don't have friends who are 20 yr mechanics..sucks. But the good news I won't have to worry about it for a long time after this little project.

Might also want to replace the knock sensor pig tail. The get old and brittle from all the heat. I had to on my HG journey. Also wrap the exhaust crossover in exhaust wrap while the heads are off its so much easier and will help prevent the next HG from blowing anytime soon.

Ordered OEM replacement as suggested.
Thanks for the heads up

Under the trucks this weekend to rebuild my idler arms because my steering is wonky at times at freeway speeds. Well after special ordering the bushings and dust seals and 2 hours wrestling the idler arm off on passenger sides it all looks new as far as the bushings go..but I did notice that my outer CV boots are basically gone and the inner CV boots are free floaters..not tied down at all on either end..and this is on both sides of the truck basically. So now to get her in the shop to get the CV boots rebuilt. Are there bearings I should be having them check? Anything I need to consider to tell the mechanics...

If you tackled the HG's...you should have no problem changing out the cv axles yourself man :p
new raman'd axles are pretty cheap too.

Well for toyota remans they are $230 each..gonna see if I can get someone local to rebuild these here in town..if cheaper than $500 then might as well let someone else get dirty.

do you wheel a lot?
I take my 4runner out eh... about every 3 weeks for camping/wheeling trips. replaced both my axles with Autozone remans. $53 bucks each with a lifetime warranty. Press out the diff "studs" and replace with nuts and bolts. will make (next time) changing the axles a lot easier. @$53 bucks a pop, you can afford to have a spare on hand too.
Mine have held up fine and I am sure they will last even longer since the manual hub swap I recently did.
Just my 2 cents :hatsoff:

I just picked up some manual hubs..so will be doing them once I get them refurbed.
I don't wheel a lot..I have aspirations too but who knows. I guess I could put the Autozone ones on and take my time rebuilding the OEM ones..then swap later.

What is the mod pushing out the studs? I see everyone says to do it and I understand why buy don't really understand where to do it from.

your front diff has 6-pressed splined studs that the cv axle slips onto and you thread on the 6 nuts after wrestling with the cv axle. if you press out the studs and replace with standard (non splined) bolts.. you can remove all 6 bolts & nuts and let the axle drop out (rather than maneuvering it around the 6 pressed in studs.
something like this, kicking myself in the rear for not doing this when I was under mine doing the axles and hubs. 3rd times the charm I guess lol

Best money you can spend on your 4Runner.......

I bought the key FOB off of eBay for my stock SR5 alarm, now I can lock/unlock the doors and actually have a working alarm. This make me very happy.

New CV axles sitting in my garage.
Went with O'Reilly since they were good price for new and come with lifetime warranty.
Gonna rebuild my OEMs and take em with me when I hit the trails.

Bought antenna kit off ebay and installed that over the weekend. The ebay power antenna mast I bought was already starting to fail so good timing. Like the look a whole lot better and only cost me $17 for mount and whip. Was a pain pulling the dash apart but not to bad, took me about 20 mins to install. Came with rubber gasket for the sidewall and everything. The mount has a smaller "footprint" than the stock so buffed out the paint in that area a little and all good. So far reception is just as good.
I noticed the side antenna connector was hanging, PO had an aftermarket HU installed...old Alpine. I need to get the adapter to connect that, a'la http://www.yotatech.com/f116/antenna-rear-window-115184/

Also got some great floormats at Costco, cut to fit. Look like the weathertech ones..nice quality.

Replaced both CV axles with AutoZone new ones, lifetime warranty. Not to bad a job, mechanic buddy did most of the work. Did the mod to push out the studs and replace with bolts one side but didn't save that much time. Seems it would be quicker to drop lower BJ 4 bolts and sway bar connector and drop it out, so EW did it that way on other side. On the trail it won't be hard to do that also IMHO and the opinion of mechanic buddy who also runs trails.
I am gonna buy another AutoZone CV axle to roll in truck on trails if needed, so think I cans sell the OEM axles? They were not popping, just need new boot inner and outer, to be reused. What should they go for?

Ordered my Trail Gear sliders from local shop. Found a great group of guys who own a local Toyota only garage, mostly 1st-3rd gen stuff..Recycle Toyota. They are rebuilding my hubs and installing the sliders. Should have them on by the weekend.

Ok..so went to the shop this morning to drop off the truck to get the sliders installed. We looked at what TG calls for on the 4R, 58" sliders, and they just seemed to short. He is gonna put on the 67" sliders, center them and turned up about 10deg so there is about 3/4 from bottom of door to top of slider.
So why does TG call for 58" sliders?

TG sliders on...

Settled on a 15deg upward angle, so there is about 1/2 an inch from bottom of door to the slider when I open the door. I think it looks great. Painted with Rustoleum...for now..might do bedliner later if I decide to line the inner wheel wells also.
Sorry she is dirty..it was gonna rain today so I skipper her bath.

I think I really need to take the chrome trim off the fenders now..
