New CV's Leaking

I install new CV's about 1000 miles ago. I was doing some work on the 4Runner yesterday and notice that the passenger side CV was leaking gear oil. I am wondering if I just didn't get the CV property seated or if something else is going on? I know these are the best pictures.

Picture 1 is the passenger side CV.

Picture 2 is the driver side CV (not leaking)

Picture 3 is the passenger side CV again, but showing the boot. It is leaking a little from here, but it looks more like grease than oil

Picture 4 is the skid plate that shows where the oil leaked. I had degreased and cleaned this when I installed the new CV's.

It doesnt look fully seated but once it pops past the c clip its pretty much in there. To me the seal inside might have gotten damaged when you where installing the new CV. I bet the seal is bad and needs replaced.

Crap. I was hoping that it just need a little tap and it would seat and seal. However, the more I think about it the more I think you're probably right about the seal being damaged. One way to find out! Just wish it was going to be nice here this weekend. Hate not having a heated garage.

Im with you man, lol, my garage is small and filled with cherry picker, 383ci motor on engine stand, compressor, all my shop tools. I cant fit a car in there. Im stuck outside with a tarp in cold weather. LOL.

If you dont have a seal removing tool I recommend getting one, makes life so much easier.

I had the same issue when a local shop replaced the passenger side CV axle. A few days after it was done I noticed oil drips on the floor so after looking at it (and I also noticed that the shop forgot to replace the skid plates!) I took it back and they did replace the axle seal for free, which they should have done the first time. They also claimed that the skid plates were "still in their solvent tank for cleaning" and they had forgotten...well, whatever, at least they replaced them as well. I bet they got a set of used skid plates ...

No further leaks...
