New door being put on, what should I look out for?

So my door was hit while open and was pulled towards the front of the vehicle. Crushed the metal near the fender and bent the hinges no longer allowing the door to close. Pics below

It's in the shop now and I got the estimate this past Friday. They are completely replacing the driver side door as well as the hinge pilar (they called it something else I just cannot remember). Luckily the metal in front of the door didn't get bent. There are only some scratches from where the door rubbed against it. So they are going to paint and blend it all in.

So basically what all do I need to look out for when I get it back? I already plan on checking for leaks or any alignment issues with the door, but is there something not so obvious that I should look out for?

Here are some pictures of it. I got it towed so that the insurance company would give me a rental right away. The door was completely unable to shut.

I would check to make sure all the clips and screws are back on the door panel, the clips along the outside edge being most important b/c they break and fall off. Make sure all the electronics work, window switches, speaker, and locks. Listen for any wind noise while driving. Check the way is closes, if you have to use more force than before then they should align it better. Check the rubber seal on the top of the door and make sure it is installed correctly, Ive seen techs but them on halfway and that never works out right.

It was extremely avoidable and stupid, and showed a great lack of patience from my roommate who I have been great friends with since I started college 6 years ago.

I had the 4Runner in the driveway wiring up the CB and both front doors were open. It was hot and the little breeze was nice.

I am in the passenger seat when my roommate pulls in to the driveway heading for the garage. I get out of the passenger seat and walk around to the driver side door to close it. Well he decided he wanted to just drive around it. Instead of waiting for me to close it... The door gets caught in his rear fender and gets pulled forward. Since it was wide open it didn't take much to do some damage.

I was at the headlight on the drivers side when the door gets hit. I was literally 1 second away from closing it. He was driving through a bush just to get around the door. He drives a jeep and it was basically undamaged, there was a minor scratch on the fender where the door hit it.

I was furious. I've had the vehicle for 2 months, I bought it as a graduation gift to myself after getting a real job. If this new door has even the slightest thing wrong with it I will take it back and make them get it right. Thankfully, his insurance is paying for everything and is a good company (USAA). The repairs alone cost just over $1900.

I too would have been furious. Can't say I would have remained calm.

BTW, what a good looking TE (as he nods to the photo to the left). Hope they get it put back together without too much trouble.

What a cruddy accident. A few other things to look for on the exterior would be, the rock gaurd on the bottom of the door, make sure it matches the fender and rear door. Also make sure the finish is factory looking. Since their blending the color out itll be hard to tell if its the right color. One way to check that is to look at the fender vs. the pillar along side the windshield, they probably wont blend that so you might be able to see a color difference there. Just have a sharp eye when inspecting the repairs. Hope all works out for ya.

When your checking the paint color, don't be afraid to get back a good distance. Try to look at it inside the building and then out in the sunlight. How many cars have you seen driving by you that looked like the car had a crappy paint match.

I always like to wait until around sunset and check the reflection in the paint. Its a great way to spot any misalignments or issues with the paint.

Use flourescent lighting indoor and then in full sun. The metallic in the paint (if any) will make it tough to match. Make sure they don't report the wreck to Carfax. If they do then they owe you more as the vehicle will be unwanted by Toyota dealers or Carmax for example.

Make sure they use Toyota parts, probably the only option but be sure.

It helps that it was a nice extremely sunny day. Also the picture of it going onto the Tow Truck went through Instagram and has a "filter" on it.

I wouldn't consider Salsa Red a "Bright Red" though. That's why I love it!

He drives a *eep, he'll eventually get a 4Runner when those repairs start piling up!

But dude that SUCKS! I remember when I let my mom take my truck to go get her friend, so what does she do? Backs over my sisters boyfriends Honda Accord Coupe. I was so pissed I almost took her $3,000 dollar diamond necklace that my dad bought for her before he died... Then I realized that my cladding (it's a 2003 SR5) took the blow pretty well and just put some black scuffs on the cladding. They buffed right out. My sisters ex wasn't even that mad, it was his brothers car and he brother is a dumbass, he tried running from the police twice and that car was totaled 3 times.

Mostly look out for the alignment of the door, be sure the window shuts and seals, the vapor barrier is on good, that you still have control on the master switch, and that there aren't and squeaks/ rattles from the door.

I just got it back not but an hour ago!

So there isn't any squeaks or rattles, and there doesn't appear to be any differences in the paint. I haven't had a chance to check the seal on the door. I'll probably take it to a carwash sometime this weekend to test that out.

Really the only thing different than it was before is how the door closes. I seems a little easier to close than the other 3 doors. Now this could just be me trying to find something wrong with it. I'll get someone else to test it out after I get off work this afternoon. Even if it is "easier" to close, I don't think it is a big deal. Not big enough to take it back at least.

Glad to hear it turned out pretty good! The door being easier to close could be that you use that one the most and the other three have not "worn in" yet? I recall you mentioning your 4runner is brand spanking new...it would not surprise me if some things on there are still a bit stiff since it's straight from the factory.

Two things I'd check for is...listening for excessive wind noise and/or air turbulence at highway speeds; and also when you open the door, you know how there are those "notches" (where the door would stop as you open it up more and more), sorry for lack of better description. I would swing open the door slowly and make sure it stops along each notch and has sufficient holding force at each position too. I'd hate to end up with a door that swings open wildly with the slightest breeze.

I haven't had a chance to drive on the highway yet, but there is no wind noise at 30-40 MPH. I'll be taking the highway home from work though.
