new LBJ's from bochtoyotasouth

I just received my new oem lower ball joints from Toyota OEM Parts | EB TOYOTA PARTS | toyotaparts.bochtoyotasouth.com | Boch Toyota South

They're black and don't seem to have any of the markings that others have said to look for on genuine LBJ's but the castings including the machined areas look high quality.

I see some letters in the cast that I don't recognize though.

"DR" and "NRA" on one

"LJ" and "ALN" on the other

The tons of discussions about lower ball joints have me paranoid about getting the right stuff, is there a way I can confirm that these are genuine Toyota OEM parts?

Seeing that you ordered straight from a Toyota dealership, I'd put the likelihood of getting a counterfeit at 0%. There are no identifying marks on the ball joints that I am aware of. Install and drive happy.

You did the right thing by getting he LBJ's directly from Toyota.
Install with new bolts too.

i got some oem from toyota lbj last week, still packaged. so i looked at them and they are just how you described yours - same markings.

mine has a tag on the package that shows they were shipped from

Thats where I plan to get mine but it's on backorder now for a full kit (04005-02235).

Seeing as how you can't get OEM ball joints from RockAuto - it has always been a concern. Get OEM from a dealer (online or in person) for lower ball joints.

RockAuto is a great source for other parts - just not lower ball joints on a 3rd gen 4Runner...

i didnt know you could buy them as a kit, i bought mine separately. paid 108.00 each.

If you buy them as a kit (04005-02235) it does not come with cotter pins or castle nuts (90171-A0005)

sometimes its bizaare how parts are offered, you would think if you're buying a kit you would get everything.

it's like i found out yesterday (this is what mcgeorge toyota is telling me) oem replacement bushings are only available for the lower rear trailing rods -not the upper rear trailing rods, i was trying to stay away from poly bushings to keep my rig stock.

I was the same until I found that out. Then seeing the price of OE front LCA bushings sealed the deal on Whiteline poly for control arms.

There's also 2 kinds, ones with boot protectors and ones without. I think boot protectors are for 2001-2002. They use different bolts with different torque spec. Flanged bolts at 59 ft/lb for regular non-boot protector LBJ and 37 ft/lb for the boot protector ones. The service manual doesn't make that clear. Then there's the debate over loctite or not. I put Loctite 243 on about 1/3 of the bolt thread. They have some green factory thread locker looking stuff on them new so don't know if it's really needed. Always use new bolts, they stretch out when torque.

Yeah I meant it comes up with a different part number for LBJ and bolts for later years and they put the boot protector in with it. I'm assume you can skip it and use the flange bolts instead on an 02? Does the protector even do much other than increase the chance of the bolts backing out or breaking? The 37 ft/lb ones are weaker.

The clamping force is the same, but the torque values are different due to the different bolt designs. You can use the flanged bolts on 01-02 as long as you don't use the boot protector. I don't think the boot protector really does much, but I don't have them on mine either.

Lower ball joints are the same part number for 96-02. Right LBJ 43340-39585 left LBJ 43340-39465. Flanged LBJ bolts 90080-10066 59 ft/lb. LBJ bolt w/washer 90119-10933 37 ft/lb.

yea, i bought oem upper and lower control arm bushings/ uppers were 33.75 each x 4, and lowers were 57.21 each x 4. about half the cost of the whole control arm. i'm the original owner of my 99 sr5 and i have 210k miles on it. i've never had any issues with it at all, but i think its getting a little tired so i'm doing some preventative maintenance, starting with the front suspension.
