That is like saying that you prefer a Corolla over Lexus LF-A because if Corolla ever breaks down, you can buy another one!

Actually, the price seems fairly reasonable. I would rather have this than Levus LFA or even a Bugatti.

I had the privilege of following a Lexus LFA awhile back for several miles, including through a tunnel. I am normally not the most passionate fellow, especially over vehicles, but let me assure you this: If you ever hear one of these cars run up through the gears to redline, especially through a tunnel, you will swear you just heard the most wondrous sound on the planet earth. Amazing car.

There are a number of upfitters for them around, so you can get them luxed up to the same level. And for that kind of money, you can go whole-hog and upfit a frame of one of these:

Obvously with out the HIAB and deck, but a Global Expedition Vehicles or similar camper top instead.

True. I am respectfully disagreeing with everyone's else opinion that that's the most awesome off-road thing that $470,000 from Mercedes-Benz gets you. Or at all.

As far as the most awesome thing to be had for $470,000, there is a shipyard in Istanbul currently selling old Turkish (formerly German) coast guard cutters, rebuilt with Volvo Penta engines, de-militarized, with the front 5" gun turret turned to a hot tub. $280,000 base luxury, and I am sure they'll have "Dr. Evil" package for under 450.

With all the armor on that, pleasure cruising off the coast of Somalia would only require short stays inside while the "fishermen" chipping your paint with their AK-47's await the bow of doom at 40 knots.

Oh scanny, you make fair points, but forget that I mentioned quarter of the price. The BTR gas engines were terrible by all accounts, but one could fit a Deutz or other top shelf powerplant in there, and get all the cabin creature comforts in there with cash to spare. It does have a big blind spot.

My point was that there are other vehicles probably better at everything that this does, other than meet bling standard in the Bahrain casba.

Even a new Unimog upfitted would come in well under that price, and would clobber this in everything but 0-60 and showing off how dumb one can be with his money.

Yes, I agree, for quarter of the money you can build a really good truck. BTR is fun of course but too impractical. But it's a beast, you can feel it's power when it drives near by. And that Mercedes - I wonder if somebody ever would take it offroad for that price : )

A Civic owner can say the same to a BMW owner that he can build a really fast car for bimmer's price of admission. Or you can build a massively powerful and capable Jeep for the price of a Land Cruiser. Or I can build an awesome Xterra for the price of a TE.

Does anyone really take a Lexus LX570 or Land Cruiser off-road? Does that make it any less worthy? People said the same thing when I bought my new G-wagen... took it to Colorado mountains within 2 months!

You're right that was a purely poor man comment I made : ) But $457K for an offroader? Still can't get my mind around the price but there are for sure rich people who might buy a two in case they total first one offroading : )
