New shoes (pictures included)

Hello guys and gals,

Two weeks ago I bought my first truck. A week ago I started to look around ebay, amazon, and craigslist for some new shoes. A couple of days ago I found toyota fj cruiser rims. Today I picked up the new set of tires (wild peak 265/70/17). I did a little research and I found that the lug nuts needed to be mag style. However the car came with acorn style lugs. I did a dry run and the acorn lugs actually tightened. Is this accurate? Can I just leave the lugs it has already? Thanks in advance. I'm so happy with my purchase.

I looked it up through past post. I'm installing the tires and rims tomorrow and I'm nervous they might not fit. Do you believe I can ride with the acorn lugs? They do catch the tread but I do not know if it is enough.

Check the seat on the wheel, if its flat you need mag type lugs, if it's tapered you need acorns.
 
Thanks Dr. But can you please tell me how it looks flat and tapered. I'm out of my element here. Thanks in advance

What wheels are you running? I think steelies use acorns, but the split threespokes on my first gen and the five spokes on my third gen both take a special lug nut with a flat surface, a shank, and a tapered seat. I don't know if that's the "mag style" they're talking about up thread.
 
Currently, I have the rims the car came with. I believe they are ford explorer rims that they put on. Now I have the fj cruiser rims.

I bought a set of lugs last year from ebay just to change them out, and the owners page spec'd them out as acorns. Of course the tread type was fine, but they were too small. I have the 5 spoke wheels and the original lug has a washer and seats flat on the wheel. Of course, I should have checked before ordering, but I never had a reason to take a wheel off, so never did.

Anyway, I think Toyota uses both, depending on the wheel type. Like you said, acorns are probably used for steel wheels.
 
Those FJ rims don't take a acorn lug nut. You will need the shank lug nut like this. Note this is a wheel locking lug, but shank style.

Oh man, I tried yesterday to tighten the acorn lugs and I was able to. But if you think it won't be safe then ill go out and buy that style better. I just did not understand why I was able to fit it without being the shank lug.
 
I had the same rims on my T4R and it's requires the shank lugs. Just looking out for a fellow mudder safety wise. Better to be safe than sorry.

Any type of lug nut will eventually tighten if you turn it far enough. That's not enough.

The taper has to match the taper on the wheels as the friction between the two is what keeps them tight. The same could be said of the type that use flat seats and those that have a hybrid of flat and taper.

The taper is also what centers the wheel on the wheel hub for any lug centric wheel.
 
K. Went to local autozone and picked up 20 shank lug nuts for the baby. LoL. Thanks for all the support. You guys really helped out. I'm located in miami, Fl if anyone one is around this way!

Glad you found your lug nuts! Of course, the wheels you are putting on are nice, so, as others have said, get some locking lugs. On ebay, you can get them cheap, but I think they will be labeled as Mag Lugs.... Just a thought...
