Hey guys,
I currently own a 09 Tacoma, and I'm looking to buy a 87-94 v6 4runner as a trail vehicle. Can't decide if i want an automatic or a manual. I don't want to constantly change clutches. But, how is the auto trannys? I haven't heard anyone complain about them. But, I do work on chevrolets ALL day!
Two, I have decided that I want to keep the IFS. I have also decided that I want to run a 35 inch tire and prob. run about a 4.88 in the front and rear with lockers. Can I only get a 4 inch lift and do the rest in a body lift? :-/.

The auto behind the 3.0 is a DOG. I would recommend getting the 5 speed. Its not a bad motor. Its got great low end torque and is more powerful than the 22re, but they have a pretty bad rap on the net. I love my 3.0

A 4" bracket lift is plenty for 35s. Or look into a long travel system such as Blazeland or Total Chaos. As for that IFS locked up front end on 35s....better carry some spare CVs or pony up for the RCV axles.

My 92 is a pickup, but is the same suspension in the front. Running 35s on no lift with a spool in the rear, v6 with a 5 speed. Works quite well for me.

What type of trails do you normally run?

You can run 35's with only a 4" susp lift. No need for a body lift. I would stick with a 4 cyl and avoid the V6's. A lot of people dislike them, do a search on them and you'll quickly see why. As for the tranny, I'm a fan of manuals, better mileage and you can control your power band.

depending on the auto 4rnr you find, some came with 4.88s as a stock option.
lockers are good idea, and as long as your not on the skinny pedal and not dumb about wheelin then you wont break as many cv's as everyone will say. ive got a lockrite locker in the front of my 87 and i love it and have yet to break a cv and i still have all original parts in the front end too :flipoff:
