Newb question re: SR5

Hello-
First time posting but have been reading for a couple weeks. I'm test-driving a 2011 SR5 tomorrow and I have a pretty basic question regarding the 4x4 in this model.

I know the Limited's use a torsen system for full-time 4wd, and that the SR5's need to be manually put into 4wd. What I don't know is if I could leave the truck in 4wd all the time?

This will be the daily driver for the wife and I, and I don't want her driving around snowy/icy streets with only the rwd engaged. Any basic explanation how that works would be fine; I'm only used to either full-time 4wd or AWD vehicles so this is new to me.

Nooooooo... trucks with part time 4wd should only be used on slippery surfaces, especially when turning. Search and you can read up on all the reasons why.
 
As already said use 4wd only on dirt (offroading ) or slippery roads, very easy to engage the 4wd by just pulling back the 4wd shifter to 4Hi if going into 4lo stop place auto shift in N then engage 4Lo hope this helps good luck with your purchase :D
 
There is a really good link I'll post when I get home (a different webforum I found it on is indirectly blocked here at work) which serves as an extremely great training applet for Toyota salespeople as it explains everything you need to know about all-time 4WD, part time 4WD, center differentials, rear-locking differentials, solenoid locking 4wd (like my wife's Rav4), LSDs, AWD across all of Toyotas trucks, SUVs and its minivan complete with quizzes and demographic scenarios. Only negative is that the 4runner covered in the applet is the 4th gen, but I believe some proportion of the 4th gen 4runner 4wd systems made it to the 5th gen. It will take about 30-45 min to get through it, buts its quite informative.

When you start getting into the nuts and bolts of the 4wd systems, you'll learn key differences between the SR5, Trail, and Limited 4wd systems with actual working knowledge and understanding.
