Newer OEM NAV radio (Scion or Toyota) VSS input help.

Has anyone out there installed these Newer OEM NAV units in a older 96-98 3rd Gen?

I put a 2013 Toyota NAV radio from a Corolla (built in XM) in and hooked up the VSS speed sensor input to pin 17 of the 28 pin connector. The NAV unit is not recognizing the VSS input. I've checked that I have installed it correctly and that I have continuity between the pin 9 of E10 on the ECU and the 28 pin connector on the NAV unit.

I'm beginning to think that I have a different VSS speed signal than the 2001. Like the unit will only respond to a Hall Effect sign wave.

I'm going to look in my manual I got that I burned to a disk and see if the newer 3rd Gens are three wire VSS sensors.

If you have a 1996 3.4l SR5- you don't have a VSS.
You should still be able to get the signal you need from the ABS computer, but you don't have a VSS.
Other than 4cyl/base model rigs, all 3rd gen 4Runners use the ABS tone rings for the speedo.
I swapped my ABS out, and swapped in a VSS from a 4cy rig, so I am familiar with that wire on a 2001. The 2001/2002's do use a different ABS system, as it's incorporated into the same ECU that runs the TRAC and VSC traction systems. So I'm not sure that my wiring info would be of any help to you.
I'm more than happy to let you know the wire color and location if that could help you out [emoji1360]

The rig is actually a 97. The EWD book I bought for my year shows a VSS. However, something is not right. Even though the EWD says it's In use for the electronically controlled trans.

Yesterday I thought about looking at the abs stuff. All I need is a pulse train the NAV will recognize. I may be the first doing this to an older 3rd gen. So yea post what you got and this afternoon or at work tonight I'll look also. It's a cool radio. But to me I can't let it go till everything works.

Are you suggesting I tap on to one of the wheel speed sensors?

EWD 138 (abs) shows EXO of the ABS controller (green w/lavender) pulsing the speedo.

EWD 70 shows SP1 (green w/orange) of the engine ECU pulsing the speedo.

I'm currently using the SP2+

It looks like my 97 sends the speedo meter pulse from the abs ECU on the grey w/lilac wire which after the speedo becomes the green w/orange wire on the SP1 input of the ECU. E12 pin 12 of ECU.

I agree I do not have a factory VSS input. The SP1 wire splice is my next step. It won't be until after next Wednesday. I have an inspection. Don't want to kill my readiness monitors.

Just an update.....

Thanks to Tyler James for pointing me in the right direction.

I switched the VSS input over the the speed signal from the ABS ECU and now have a speed readout on the diagnostic screen.

There must be a Toyota standard. Because even though the NAV unit came from a Corolla the speed is dam close. The diagnostic screens are only in kilometers per hour, I'm off 1 to 2 klicks per hour. Which I think is closer to 1mph off.
There has got to be a standard at Toyota that no matter the vehicle and tire size it's the same pulses per mile.

I'll watch the map tomorrow. I switched over the speed input while gravity bleeding my Cummins after replacing a rusted front brake line. My garage it 2 miles from the house. Just watched the diagnostic screen on way home.
