This is a valid point; assuming the truck was free (well, the 4Runner, their 2nd gen Tacoma was before they got "big"), and I would venture to say that the vast majority of the parts on it were free, or very nearly free given the amount of exposure they get.
To follow this logic, whatever vehicle(s) are replacing this one (I'm going to take a guess and say a TRD Pro Sequoia will be one of them) will most likely be given to them at no or minimal cost, as will the parts being equipped onto them; thus any fund recouped from selling the previous vehicle(s) are essentially pure profit

I will say that I think this one is pretty cool. I would drive that in a heartbeat. Not the normal slap-it-on kind of mods. That price for 110k miles is OBSCENE, though. :fear:

Good question, that folding side-mirror mod is worth it's weight in gold TRD emblems.

Seriously, WTF? They took a rare(er) 5.1 Trail Edition and turned it into one that looks like every other broverlander rig out there.
Also, LOL on their description' "Our goal was for it to be incredibly unique and still have somewhat subtle look.."
So they lifted it and added amber ditch lights, a snorkel and roof rack. This is about as subtle as a fart in church.

For what? Using older vehicles in the fleet to run upcoming production?
XOverland is a business, make no mistake. We are not hiding or claiming otherwise. The production (of free content) employees a dozen people, many of which are supporting families as well. While some vehicles and some parts have been given as in-kind value towards sponsorship packages, there are no illusions from manufactures or vendors that said products won't be sold at the end of their tenure to find future productions. Even if 100% of the vehicles and build products were offered as in-kind sponsorships. The expeditions themselves have major costs (shipping, airfare, fuel, food, film permits, insurance, etc) not to mention massive man hours it takes to not only produce the show but in some cases the original misic too.
Toyota is absolutely supportive of these vehicles being sold, just as they have previous vehicles being sold. From a marketing standpoint, they don't allot much budget to support folks driving older vehicles.

Weekends out on the trail or traveling the globe versus weekends in the garage or waiting on parts? I dunno, I kinda like using them far more than working on them. Working on them is the cost, using them is the reward. I build Cruisers for a living (well primarily sell parts for them) and if I could afford to buy professionally built vehicles with top shelf parts versus safe and slave in the shop on nights and weekends to prep for a trip... I certainly would.

The post you quoted has nothing to do with price... it had to do with the enjoyment of building versus buying. Assuming the end product is the same (same parts, same platform) it's often in fact less money to buy someone else's project. One can "GAF about money" and still find absolute value in buying a complete project so they can spend more of their time on the trail and less in their garage
