No map dvd

anyone else getting this message occasionally while driving?

typically it seems to happen to me while driving around in the first 15 min or so of driving, stays on the screen for ~5 seconds, then changes to CHECKING MAP DVD and then goes back to the map. :wtf:

kinda annoying....

No sure where you are located, but the DVD maps are broken up into zones. Can it be that you are 15 minutes away from the edge of the map? switching zone might help in that case.

also -

forgive my ignorance - the only place i have found to set a "Zone" is on the page where one searches for a specific address. theres a button in the lower right hand corner where the user is able to designate a specific state/states.

is there somewhere else to set this as well?
 
I haven't seen it at all. Perhaps your disc is scratched and it's having a hard time reading it? You can eject the dvd and look at the surface, perhaps if it seems dirty clean it with a disc cleaner (do not use amonia based products on a dvd to clean). Also, always remember to wipe in an outward motion (from the center, OUT). That means, place cleaning cloth (lint free) near the center, and pull it straight towards the edge of the disc. Repeat around the disc. Don't "wipe all around" the dvd as if cleaning a coaster, etc you could scratch it. You can eject the map disc by going to your map button on the home screen. One of the options is eject map dvd. (As seen from the "SETUP" menu. Just hit "SETUP", you may have to "go right" one screen to see the MAP button)

thanks for the tip

i just ejected the dvd and had a look at the surface. it basically looked perfect. a couple of little blemishes, but nothing that would result in an error like that - especially that often.

per my earlier question - there is no other way to set the zone, correct?

There is no "zone" setting, but there is a "search area" setting. Your NAV owner's manual covers all this information in extreme detail, but I will throw you a bone (this time) :)

To change the "Search area":

1. Press "DEST"
2. Press "Address"
3. Near bottom, note the "SEARCH AREA" (mine says TX, OK) - hit the search area button to change to different areas.
 
yeah - thats the one i have changed - i just wanted to make sure there wasnt some OTHER place to change it.

hmm. if it persists, i wonder how hard its going to be to get a new DVD from the dealer? obviously it would be a lot easier to try that next rather than have them pull the whole system...

If mine were doing that, I'd be going to the dealer to have it checked. It's possible you have a bad laser (or some other "reader") component. It's under warranty until 36k miles, do it now, while it's covered. It's not hard to pull that NAV unit out. It looks pretty integrated, but truth told, the whole thing comes out fairly easy.
 
Not near my truck, but my previous car had different discs for the different zones in which they had broken up the continent (this was in a Volvo). I don't recall if we have a single disc or multiple, but logic would reason we have multiple based on the volume of data. Does your disc provide the best coverage for the area you drive in?

Beyond that I would guess that your GPS receiver may be faulty and providing a location that the system can't find within the area you are driving.

I downloaded and upgraded to v10.1 via torrents and such. With the new disc that I have burned, it occasionally shows that message for around a second. Now the old factory v9.1 disc I never saw that message maybe you got a defective disc?
 
There is a DVD in there that contains the Nav maps. That way Toyota can upgrade them and charge you $200 for it.

I forget right now but the manual tells you how to get at it as it's got its own slot.
 
Not trying to hijack the thread, but I figured I would just answer a couple questions here. I downloaded the torrent called v10.1 gen 6 u92 Toyota navigation. There are multiply version 10s. I dont remember the torrent site but I still have the torrent. On a past car I always used verbatim discs but this time I had a memorex disc so I used it. I burned them with Nero that came on the computer ( in the past I used a program call imgbrn). When I first put it in I didn't think it was going to work took about 15 sec of saying no map disc before it finally worked. The disc has to be a dual layer dvd btw. To eject it push info then map data then eject DVD. Just searche real quick and I believe this was the torrent I used http://www.torrentv.org/download/[email protected]

If you load multiple cd's in your unit, the CD slot is on TOP, the NAV DVD slot is on bottom. You can use my instructions above to eject the map dvd if necessary. (I'd personally leave it alone unless changing to a newer version. If you screw that dvd up your nav system will not function.)

I had to go out and take a look, dang :). My wife loaded the CD player, I usually ride with SAT radio, never knew it was there. Unbelievable. Thanks Miller...:thumb3:
