No power

I came from a 2010 Tacoma 4dr long bed w/ 255/85/16 KM2's on it and felt it would walk all over my 2012 SR5. I saw someone had posted the different power rating with higher octane so I gave it a try. I ran my tank really low of regular, filled it with 93 octane and drove 10-15 miles. I then pulled the battery cables and shorted them together to drain all of the caps in the truck. Hooked up the battery and gained fifty miles in range. I also drove it to and from work gently before finally mashing the gas to be very surprised by it's new found grunt. Apparently with the dual variable valve timing it was able to advance timing quite a bit more. The truck even has a low tone rumble that was not there before.
Another thing I addressed was tire pressure. The dealers usually set tire pressure to 32psi for comfort. However, that does not lend well to acceleration and braking. I find that 42psi make the truck feel a little more lively. The best part is if you don't like it let the air back out. Coming from E load range tires with 55psi the ride doesn't seem to harsh. So far my family and customers haven't made mention of a poor ride.
2 things you can try that won't cost a ton of money. If you don't get the extra pep out of higher octane(remember to reset the truck) and tire pressure go back to soft tires and regular gas.

Yes it definitely could be quiker but coming from a 3rd gen it's sure an inprovement. You just need to push harderr on thet gas pedal. I've learned to live with it.

Just use Shift mode.....

I think it has plenty of power, you just need to use the Shift mode from time to time. I just did a 2500 mile road trip through all types of terrain and learned alot about my 4r. It's nice to have options. When i'm puttin around town I slap it in drive, but when I want/need to get the rpms up I go to shift mode and this thing moves out quite well.

Nice post Okki. :)

People living in flat country may find them ok but get into big hills and mountains and you have to keep them floored to keep up with traffic. That is my problem with them, I am just not used to having to push the gas pedal down so far so often.

My two cents on the 5th gen being slow...

My last vehicle was a 2008 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2L V8. In factory form, it had 403HP and 417FT-LB of torque. I had some work done to it, so it was likely pushing somewhere around 450/450.

Interestingly, in stock form the power delivery felt much like the 5th gen. You had to really mash on the gas to get it to move...most of the time it was programmed to LEAP for top gear to increase gas mileage. When I really jumped on it, that big V8 had plenty of power...but you had to slam on the gas to realize it.

My point is that the sluggish feel of modern vehicles seems to have more to do with how they're programmed from the factory for MPG than their respective outputs. I intend this statement only to describe how many vehicles feel under normal part-throttle acceleration.

I do feel that the 5th gen is a little light on low-end torque...I managed to exacerbate this problem by adding bigger, taller, heavier tires (which I don't regret...it looks AWESOME!) Even as a guy who loves to go fast who has always owned strong V8 powered vehicles in the past, I don't think the 4Runner's power is unacceptable...it just takes a little getting used to.

I, for one, would be the first one in line for a 4.6L V8 4Runner if they ever decided to release one (a Trail HD model, please, if you're listening Toyota!). This doesn't mean I'm unhappy with my 5th Gen, it just means I think it would be perfect with 2 more cylinders and some free flowing exhaust so I could listen to that sweet V8 music.

Finally, I want to second Harper's recommendation to try driving the 4Runner in 4th. If you're not happy with how it drives now, give this a try. I find this is a great solution to keep some power around town without sacrificing too much mileage.

I know Toyota knows how to make the programing right if it wanted to. My 2011 Toyota Avalon has the 3.5 V6 and you have to be carefull not to hit the gas to hard from a standstill or it will spin the tires easily even at part throttle.

All I know is that i am dishing out 4 grand when the supercharger comes out around June or trading it in for a 2014 model if it comes out with a v8 that would provide same power or more as supercharger would. Or a diesel (one can dream).

Oh Jeez-Louise! Not ANOTHER one of these! Aaaarrrggghhhh.

It's a big, strong, hunky SUV, designed to return decent mileage in it's class. This thing has gobs of power, people. Just learn to use your ****ing foot.
and that would negate what it was designed for, according to you.

an suv should have low end, its not a light car, it needs a healthy engine, with some grunt. not one that needs spun up high to get work done.

if thats in the design, it was a bad one.

I have about 10,000 miles now and I kind of feel like the car has "loosened up" a bit and allowed me to feel more powerful than it felt when it was new. I have gone from total dissatisfaction to feeling that its not too bad now. Give it some time and see if it helps. With that being said, I will have a supercharger as soon as its available.

For such a bad-ass looking truck, it should be a little bit better in the power dept. the vehicle exceeds my expectations in every other way though and I couldn't think of another one I would want.

I feel the same. I'm at 14k now and I think the computer finally learned how I want to drive. Acceleration is a little more snappy and I'm happy. Bury the pedal and it goes quick. Maybe that or I'm just used to it now...

Here ya go, for the Whiners:

Autoblog:

Time to quit your bellyaching and pony up your pennies, Jeep fans. Chrysler has announced the Jeep Grand Cherokee will bow with a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine in the first quarter of next year. The engine yields 237 horsepower and an impressive 406 pound-feet of torque, and all that twist shows up from 1,800 rpm on. If you're counting, that's 16 lb-ft more than the 5.7-liter V8. Expect to see it bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission. As you may recall, this isn't the first time we've heard this news.

Jeep CEO Mike Manley let the news slip while speaking with Ward's Auto at the LA Auto Show, and said if buyer feedback is any indication, the new model should see healthy sales. Manley also pointed to the now deceased Liberty diesel, which the executive said that enjoyed a faithful, if small following. Odds are we'll hear more about pricing and fuel economy when the diesel Grand Cherokee gets an official unveil at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

Oh, and good luck...

Suprise suprise. Another bash the 5th gen thread in the 5th gen forum. Do you not know how to test drive before you buy? Some like it and some do not. Sounds like you are not happy. Expensive mistake. Good luck the 5th gen has a high trade in value.

The nerve of some people.....

5th Gen Acceleration

When mine reached about 6000 miles, the performance was noticeably better.
It was the same way on a Tacoma TRD that I had previously.

No power 2

Lots of haters on this site, thanks to you that had a informational reply, lets recap, I really do like the new 4-runner, great vehicle, looks good, drives good and has more room than the previous model. I was just stating my opinion of my thoughts on the engine, just thought it was a bit light on torque and quite a bit noisier than my 2007 V6. I run a Tundra so you know what kind of power they have and if I really need a fix I hop in my 57 chev and bake the tires until the cab is full of smoke. Just my 2 cents on our new rig.

I always love that one:biggrin2:...... I had a 67' Chevelle SS 396 when I was 16,......and then I grew up and joined adult society.

I don't understand why a lot of people get very offended when someone post truth about how the 4runner lacks in the get up and go. Like myself I feel the 4runner is lacking in the butt dyno and maybe I should have test driven a little more but if I didn't buy the 4runner I wouldn't be a member of this forum. Also 4runner's have a very good reputation so can't blame people that they didn't test drive enough before buying its a Toyota 4Runner!!! I had to travel a 100miles just to get a silver limited.

I looked into trading my limited 12 in but there isn't anything out there that looks as badass as the 5th gen 4runner in my opinion so if I had to it all over again I would probably buy the same 4runner again and be on this forum speaking my mind. If they made a V8 I would definitely trade it in.

Look into a expensive throttle modifier (sprintbooster) 300 bucks for plastic box that dosnt fit well, but works great helps the dead peddle. Installed the blitz version on my ISF did wonders as well.

Have they released a SprintBooster for the 5th gen T4R yet?
