No rack or rear tire carrier, how would you carry fuel?

Leaving Tucson 22NOV13 to head home to western WA until 10DEC13. I didn't plan properly and won't have a roof rack and rear bumpers take too long from order to install that I won't have one in time. I have two jerry cans and would like to take extra fuel but can survive without it, any opinions on how to take spare fuel without keeping it inside the truck so I don't have to deal with fumes? I'm not opposed to ordering rotopax if there's a way to use the OEM cross bars or am I just Shit out of luck?

The 4gal rotopax have plenty of holes in them to strap them down. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to strap one or two down to the stock cross bars.

Because I'll be on vacation away from the dept releasing some stress and just don't want to be limited to needing to have a gas station nearby if I want to just keep driving the logging roads. Good advice tholayball:

I was in Autozone the other day, they had a crappy rack-in-a-box for $50. Or your craigslist should have plenty of used-but-better ones for under $100. If you have to have new and the Autozone budget rack isn't good enough, check Amazon and pay the extra four bucks for two day shipping.

IMO, gas can racks on the bumper or Rotopax or other expo crap like that are for guys that regularly need a convenient way to carry spare fuel, or guys with too much money that want to look like they regularly need to carry spare fuel. It sounds like this is kinda a one time thing or at least rare occasion for you, so I'd grab a used or cheap rack and throw the jerry cans up there and forget about it.

That's a Rocky Road Outfitters rack those are mounted to.

If you've got the stock rack you can easily strap a Rotopax to those bars without any of their fancy mounting hardware. I would stick a small towel or something underneath to protect the paint, but other than that you should be good!

Or a pool noodle cut open so it will wrap around your crossbars. Works like a charm with my canoe.

I agree this will be a random occurance which is why I kept putting it off and forgot till now, I don't want to drop a lot of $ on a temporary fix. I will swing by autozone and see what they have, thanks for the info!

Thanks again for some good ideas, I had posted this question fresh off duty and very tired and didn't mention the hitch being used, or that when I return I will be ordering a rack from [MENTION=68079]drabbits[/MENTION] so I don't want to spend a bunch of $ for something that will be used once. Some of those ideas were perfect.

This thing work well? I picked up a cheap one from Canadian Tire last winter with a squeeze pump in the line and it's a total p.o.s.

I haven't had any complaints about it. Once you figure out how to get the flow started it's the easiest thing to use without the mess of a spout.

Yeah, a Jiggler / Super Siphon is a great thing to have handy. They work really well. Those squeeze bulb things are crap.

I used ratchet straps to hold Rotopax and Maxtrax on the stock rack. It worked great. Just recently I switched to another mounting system. Check my thread for a write up.
