not much power

So hopefully someone can help me out here, i just got a 90 4runner just replaced the alternator.The thing doesnt seem to have any get up and go in it, i seem to have to step on the gas to get it to go.I have never owned a toyota before and im not sure how the 3.0 engine is supposed to respond but im sure its better then this, or who would own one.It looks like new plug wires new air filter, noticed now that after it has ran for a minute or two the check engine light comes on,isnt on when i first start it up. Any help?

How many miles on it?
Have y ou checked to see if the CEL has set any error codes in th ECM?

it has 236 thousand miles on it, i havent been able to see if there are any codes yet.Im going to see if anyone can do that for me tomorrow.

the 3.0 is notouriously slow and its got a good bit of milage on it...i would try sea foam..i used it and i noticed a bit of a power gain. it will clean all the carbon out of the engine...also add it to the gas tank and where u put oil in the valv cover..it should help alot. it will smoke a bit and that is normal.

if you have a knock sensor code it won't get out of it's own way very sluggish

Funny thing i took it to pep boys and they pulled the codes and i have a bad knock sensor.Looks like a pain in the butt to replace.

Today i go and put 91 octane in it and drive to work, the check engine light never came on, and i just got back from lunch and it still isnt on, i wonder if it could have juts been some really bad gas?
