I hope you are right. That one white side view picture looks pretty bad though...kind of like a bloated highlander.

Is it just me or does it look like they've switched to a unibody? I don't see a frame anywhere. If they have, I'm throwing in the towel.
btw, I find it funny that the people who are complaining the most about the looks are people with 4th gens. Im sorry but the 4th Gen is by far the biggest disgrace to 4runners. Theyre massive, ugly and full of useless gizmos and gadgets. What was nice about the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gens was that they were the only thing on the road that even stood a chance against Jeep in the off road world then the 4th gen comes along and it just sucked. Its off road capabilities were garbage and the size of it made it even worse. By the looks of it, Toyota's taking it back to its roots and making it more of an off road vehicle, for all you people who want a 4runner for its looks, ride comfort and extra crap you dont need, first of all, Im not sure why you'd want a 4runner but Toyota has obliged and made a limited version for you. Not that i even slightly like Jeep but why do you think the CJ has done so well? because its been almost exactly the same since WWII! I'm sorry for being such a jerk about it but you all should be ashamed of yourselves

Toyota has a thing about making their vehicles appearance to be very similar to each other which Toyota likes things failry vanilla and safe and they sell alot of cars so they stick with what works for them.
Overall the Toyota lineup is a bit boring with too many SUVs and no affordable sporty coupes excluding the Scion tC but I'm talking something near the $30k mark that is exciting and edgy and has 300+hp;even Hyundai has the 306hp Genesis coupe.
No more Supras,Celicas or MR-S/MR2s and no replacements.

Hey dark runner why dont we test that with bt216's runner or roams001's runner against an older runner and see who gets disgraced? the new ones would kick a$$ because of raw power and torque under the hood. 2003-2009 4runner 4.0L 236 HP 266lb-ft torque and a 4.7L 260HP 306lb-ft torque. what do 3rd gens have... oh yea a weak little 183HP engine with 217lb-ft torque. who do u think would make it out of a steep creek bed or up a slippery rock ledge? in fact make that any 4th gen with a lift and 4x4 against any 3rd or 2nd gen with a lift and 4x4.(same amount of lift) dont get me wrong i respect the old ones but i think u need to lay off a bit at the older ones being the best. u might hurt someones feelings that just bought a new one. and u have to admit that the new ones are capable off road u might just be mad cause they look better and have more power and more room. No offense

Using the skinny pedal is no replacement for a skilled driver + capable vehicle.
I'd rather have ground clearance, e-locker, KDSS, etc over horsepower for off-roading.

Funny, but when the 4th Gen came out, especially the V8, I said to myself " finally, a 4Runner that doesn't look like a toy car and sound like a vacuum cleaner with a full bag as it goes down the road ". Personally, although I own a 2007, I think the 2003-2005 is the best looking 4Runner regardless of generation.
All the rock crawlers forget that if it wasn't for all of the 4runners being sold to people who never take them off road and who only use them for daily drivers, towing , and yes mall crawling, and that's by far and away the majority of 4runner owners btw , Toyota would be hard pressed to justify selling the 4Runner at all in North America.
And while the car buying general public can easily recognize a Jeep CJ as a capable off road vehicle ( just say the word "jeep" to them and they know immediately what you are talking about, that's why the CJ has done so well over the years. ), most of the general car buying public doesn't even know that the 4Runner exists, let alone that it is a capable off road vehicle.
And finally, the present CJ is not even remotely similar to a WWII era jeep, other than a vaguely similar shape.

A big +1, coming from 2 Nissan Z's into 2 T4R's, Toyota needs to step up the game. Hell I still think Im in a spaceship when I sit in a late model Supra! However slow and steady wins the race as they say...

I drove the hell out of those when I was in Djibouti, I hate them! I did enjoy the Nissan Patrol and Land Cruisers though. Im optimistic that in the flesh the Gen 5 will be ok.

I'm sure I will eventually learn to like the new look, but it looks like a Rav 4 humped a honda pilot. The 1st through 3rd generation had very truck-like and masculine body lines, especially on the front end. The 4th gen set itself apart from the other boxy SUVs on the road because it had some very unique body lines. The side profile in particular on the 4th gen is quite refreshing compared to ford exploders, or other boxy SUVs.
The 5th gen seems to take on the boxy, big plastic front end. I look forward to seeing them in person, but it seems like the 4Runner has lost the looks we are use to, and looks like many of the other boxy SUVs on the road.
