Official SPC(light racing) Product update!!!

Thanks guys I contacted spc Friday and got there response today so here it is I copied and pasted it. Guess I'll bolt them on next week

We would advise against using a thread locking compound on those threads as you do need to be able to readjust that ball joint. If you are concerned about the ball joint sliding in its slot, let me reprint one of FAQ questions about these arms:

Q6: The upper nut on my ball joint came loose. How can I prevent this?
A6: This may occur on arms that have been powder coated or painted, but also occasionally on trucks with very large tires that are used for rough rock crawling. We have revised the torque spec on the top nut from 120 ft lb to 150 to combat this issue. If you feel that you are at risk from having the nut come loose, you can torque it up to 175ftlb. If you have decided to powder coat or put on another secondary paint, it is recommended that you re-torque the nut a day or two after the initial alignment, as added coatings tend to compress, and may affect clamping torque.

It is never a bad idea to retorque those nuts after a day or two. I have never taken a call where the ball joint slipped unless the arm had been painted or powder coated and hadn't been retorqued.

For your second concern, the weld failure was caused by a tolerance stackup on some vehicles where the washers on each side of the bushing grabbed the bushings too hard and caused fatigue cracking over time. This has been eliminated by only using one washer on the outside of the bushing so there isn't the possibility of that happening. This does mean you only want to use the hardware supplied in your kit; do not reuse any old hardware.

SPC Alignment settings ..?

What do you guys have your alignment set at for the spc ball joints ? B,C,D,... etc..

Or is there a page already dedicated to this ?

I am having a heck of a time with the alignment and shop guys, no major arguments, just can't seemed to get it lined out :(

Thanks in advance :thanks:

I've got mine on the D setting (logo facing out) and the caster slid all the way out. My alignment techs are able to get 4 degrees positive caster and camber within spec without touching the UCA's.

Can you verify from these pics what spc version i have? I installed these in spring of 12 sometime.

I have experience the driver side nut loosen to finger movable once. It had been making noises for awhile before i discovered the loose nut.

These pictures were taken last July after about a 1,500 mile round trip to silver lake sand dunes. Front suspension bottomed out unexpectdly once when i went too fast through dunes. You can see in the pics that the UCA hit the upper fender and also see where the tire rubbed. The scRatches on UCA where it looks like brass is exposed is where it hit the fender.

I'm not exactly sure what version, but I can tell you it is an old version. You should call SPC up and get the newest bushing hardware. The version you have consists of the large washers sandwiching the bushing. This caused issues because it did not allow enough bushing movement, which caused the welds to fail.

Do yourself a favor and inspect the welds on your UCA's at the pivot points. A friend of mine had one of the welds break completely due to these washers. Luckily the UCA stayed in place by gravity but it could have been bad.

On my 4th gen, I have them set at the "D" setting with the BJ sitting about 3/4 of the way out on the slot. No problem getting 4 degrees of caster and camber in spec. We did have to adjust the LCA's so I have a pretty aggressive caster split to get the 4runner to drive straight due to the ST Maxx's pulling to the right. Drives good now.

Ouch, must've been a hard hit. I've hit the fender well a couple times when I was running some worn out 5100's. You may want to look into some Wheeler's Superbumps to help with that.

Just thought I would drop a couple pics here.
I just replaced the SPC bushings on my UCA's with the SpecRide bushings.

I had the original 1st version.

Pic 1,2...original rubber bushing.

Pic 3,4...SpecRide bushings.

So, are the light racing ones different from the ones SPC has now? I have some SPC UCA on my 4R, but mine are more of a flat design than the ones in these pics.
