Has anyone painted the 15 inch steelies?

I know they are but, you asked what to use to clean them first with. I'm saying to clean it before you sand them, use a chrome wheel cleaner, it's stronger. Then after sanding them, wipe it down with either one, to prep it for paint or primer. Has to have a oil/dirt free surface. Then you good to go..

Thanks for the advice. I do appreciate it. I'll start my shopping list. I picked up some self-etching primer today.

Looking forward to a tutorial too.


I have acetone.....how different is that from acid tone?

I just painted my wheels this weekend but I don't have that post ready yet. I will come back and edit this when I am ready. Painting your wheels should be similar so check the thread out.

Here's my most recent project:

Started off with this:

Then grinded them down with an angle Grinder and a wire wheel:

Then masked and primed them with Zinc Primer:

Then painted them, but sanded off the outer ring:

Did the Center caps too:

Finished product:

All in all, a good 2 days of work, and about $75.00 in paint bought..........

Answered all you question above in red. I just went in not thinking too much about it and turned out ok. :thumb3:

I personally don't like the way these came out, but props for trying the 2-tone (correction, they came out well, I just don't don't like the look that much). I have been thinking about 2-tone and yours is the only one I have seen done like this.

I was thinking about my wheels (the 5-stars) while looking at them, and I realized that i kind of liked the look of the brake dust collecting mostly on the inside of the spokes, darkest towards the rim, and getting lighter towards the center. I was thinking that painting them like that would look really cool (it'd look like shadowing). I don't know how I could paint the fade easily, so I kind of gave up on it, but I still think it'd look really cool.

I have since cleaned my wheels, which makes them look alot nicer, but I lost the shadowing effect I had going on. I really need to paint them soon...

Does anyone have pictures of a truck like this (black w/thundercloud trim) with gunmetal wheels? My buddy has a '99 Limited like ^ truck, and he's wanting to powdercoat the wheels. But he's not sure if he just wants to do the factory silver color, or go darker.

2001 wheels

I see a lot of people painting their 3 spoke and 5 spoke limited.
I was hoping to paint my 5 spoke sport wheels on my 2001 runner. Are they a different material?
And if so will they hold paint as well as other wheels?

Just do the same and you'll be fine.

They're the same as the 5 Spoke limited wheels. Follow the steps everyone else has posted. Just take your time with the prep work.

My question is...what to do about the center cap? or should I go cap-less?

Doesn't look terrible with the unpainted caps actually. But couldn't you just paint those too?

I could, but PC company said the texture and color would be hard to match with a spray can. I may try plastidip on a cap to see if I can match the texture. I wonder if duplicolor has textured spray paint ?
