OME 880 vs 881 and 906 vs 890

I run 881's and 906's and my stance is level unloaded. I don't ever really carry enough weight to worry about negative rake. 880's would look good too or 890's in the rear with 881's in front if you want rake. If I were to do it again, i'd probably build a little more rake in, but I'm happy with the turn out. 37" at every wheel.

Sure sounds like the winning combo is the 881 up front and 890 in the rear. Advice on shocks? Is the 60028 The "comfort" shock that should be less harsh than the 60027 as I understand it?

Yes, you are correct. From what I have heard you should NOT run the 60027 with 890's if you dont have any rear armour or a lot of constant weight in the back. I bought my 890's used (with 4 months of use) and the guy I bought them from had the 60027's installed and the factory rear bumper. He said the ride was poop and he would never recommend it to anyone. I ordered the 60028's to go with the 890's. And I think those are still going to be pretty stiff.
PS - I got my rear lift in today after 8 hours of wrenching (well, rear lift and did an E-locker axle swap while I was in there) and the rear is noticeably stiffer with the 60028's than stock, but I havent had it on the road yet.... Ill have the front end done tomorrow and some pics as promised.

As I promised:

Before: Stock 98 suspension @ 250,000 kms, no spare tire, no hitch

After: Rear - OME 890 coils (w/rubber cones in), OME 60028 rear shocks
Front - OME 881 coils (NO top plate spacers), OME N91C shocks

Spare tire mounted underneath weighs ~90lbs, still no hitch

It does have rake. BUT I would rather it like this so it sits level when I add 200-300lbs and go camping/wheeling. I still may remove the rear rubber cones to lower the rear by ~.5inch

The trucks stance is really good and the rake IMO is perfect. The only thing you may find if you remove the rubber cone is that the springs will move and rattle, and the metal to metal contact can be annoying too!:thumb3:

Never thought about that. Thanks for the input. I may be just leaving them "as-is" then!

OP here, thanks again for posting those pics. Your truck looks fantastic! You've settled my mind completely on the same setup. I am going to get mine installed on July 6th, but I can hardly wait. Thanks again.

I'm a tad nervous that the wife will think the ride is too stiff, even with the 60028's in the rear... but after 140K miles, anything is going to be more stiff that is for sure.

Ok, as promised... here is a quick pic of the final product. My driveway makes the stance look a tad deceiving... it has a mild rake, but the pic almost makes it look level. I did NOT do spacers in the front. Again, this is the 881 coils up front with 890 rear. Enjoy!

hmmm this setup looks framiliar! haha looks great man. I have wheeled mine 4 times now with the lift and I am loving the suspension setup. The rake is perfect because it sits level when it's loaded up and it Flex's great! (my sway bars were eliminated upon lift install, so that does help some but...)

Thanks man... yeah, I am going to get it out this up and coming weekend. I wanted to yesterday, but couldn't make it happen with the family. I still want to ditch those running boards, but now that it is lifted the wife and kids need em to hop in. They would all kill me if I axed them now. LOL.

Only "issue" so far is that my inner CV boots are seeping a tiny bit of grease. I was able to remove the old clips and re-clip them with some nice marine grade hose clamps with rolled edges, so they shouldn't cut into the boots. I am hoping that does the trick. Should know more this week as I drive it some more.

So far, I am super happy with the setup and ride. It is definitly more firm than stock (as expected), but not as harsh as I thought it would be. I had it loaded up with probably 200 pounds worth of gear for T-ball, and kids over the weekend and it rode like a champ and looked great too.

Funny story... I am the coach of our T-ball team and named it the "4Runners". These are all 4 year old kids... and we selected jersey #4 for my son. Pretty neat stuff. The kids on the team love my truck... it's like their mascot.

:guitar3: PICS PICS PICS! MOAR, I am contemplating the same setup and would like to get a ride review from you on it. Tell me what you would use if you were to do it all over again etc. etc.:thanks:

Bought a used pair of 890s but found brand new 906s for $15 more. Does anyone run a 97 with bilsteins all around with 906? Wondering if I'll be sitting level with this setup unloaded.

890 auxiliary mods

People with 890s in the back, did you or do you think there is a need for any of the following auxiliary modifications going up to the 3 inch(ish) lift?

- Extended Rear Brake Line
- Panhard drop/adjustable panhard
- Extended Bump Stops

I have 906 but hate the ride. I want to soften it up and gain as minimal lift as possible. My hub to center is 22" with the limited flares. Can someone let me know what their hub to center is with the 890s if they have limited flares?

Dont go with 880 front coils

I got 880 in the front and 890 in the rear. My main goal was to lift my truck 2 inches and stay as close to stock reliabilty as I could. 880 didnt give me any lift and my measurments after they were installed were 20.75 inches from the center of my hub to the fender flare (what stock third gens came with). My rear sat 2.75 higher then stock with the 890 coils, I had about 2.5 of rake compared to the rear of the truck (890 coils). I reinstalled 881's and now im sitting at 22.75 in the front and sitting with 1 inch of rake. I am happy with one inch of rake because this way when i load up my truck with freinds or equipment it sits level. If you want to go with stock measurments and want a good aftermarket spring then go with the 880's (aproximatly $150, genuine toyota ones are going to cost you $$$). If you want to get 2 inches of lift and still keep the same toyota reliabilty then go with the 881's! And to the people who say ARB springs are too stiff are forgeting that this isnt a mercedes. In conclusion I love how they perform and how they feel on and off road!

Ps stick with arb shocks as well since they were engineered to work together.

I have the same on my '97 and it sits exactly as you describe. Empty, it rides a little more like a lumber truck than I'd prefer, but loaded it's smooth, relatively controllable(for a truck) and not dragging its butt.

I didnt do any modifacation with the 890's in the rear and it feels solid so far! I have done a few easy trails so no expirence with crazy flexing yet but I dont think 2.75 inches of lift is going to snap your brake lines, there must be enough slack built in for 2.75 inches of lift, but I would like to ask this from people with better experience and knowledge then me!

I'm running used 891s - not 890s I know - with rear 5th gen rear stock shocks which are slightly longer than OEM 3rd gen tokicos. It rides super smooth even unloaded, yup unloaded. 23.5" hub to center. I'd imagine 890s to be comparable if not even smoother. I ran 891s with brand new 3rd gen OEM shocks, it was 23" hub to center, and it rode like a stiff garbage truck bouncing on any bump on the road rattling the rear end.
:hatsoff:
