New guy here from Idaho,
I have a 1988 pickup 22R carburated.
It's been in the family since 89 and I've owned it for 14 years.
I know the history of the truck since new. It has 168k miles on it
and I'm chasing a phantom overheating problem.
-waterpump was done 5 years ago
-radiator is less than a year old
-fanclutch/thermostat/gauge sending unit is brand new
-no leaks or water in oil
-symptoms are the same with 180 and 195 degree thermostat
It slowly starts overheating after 30 minutes of driving going passed 3/4 on the gauge and hits close to red hot soaking when it's shut off. If the a/c is on it heats up faster. If I drive with the heater running it will go back down to half way. My mechanic is stumped and wants it for an hour to do a detailed diagnostic. The last time it had this problem was in '02 where a new radiator solved the problem. Any suggestions would be great!! I'm dreading it being a headgasket however this truck has never overheated at red on the gauge.
