P0441 Code!

Yeah, gas cap is okay. Like I said its holding vacuuming. so there can't be a leak.

I am trying to say the valve in the rear is gone, look at first pic, its a block of rust. I am going to try and run it off a 9v battery if that doesnt work, then off to mechanic land to be replaced.

These are not difficult to replace at all. Toyota Rust Penetrant is the best out there for this stuff. The valve itself is plastic inside, the metal is just the bracket that holds it in.

Just received the new valve, I couldn't tell where things were until I saw the new valve. pretty sure the mount here is gone. But we shall see.

The more I think about it I am thinking its the charcoal canister. My dad mentioned he toped it off so many times. till the point where he saw the fuel. so pretty sure its gone. Hoping mechanic tells me other wise when I bring it in early next week.

I agree I'm sure it is easy to replace, just quiet busy with a few things at the moment, and I would like to keep him in the loop if it is indeed the canister. I dunno if it make sense, but I have been over thinking this check engine light for too long. Just want it to go away.

That's what mechanics are there for. I bet your canister is toast too.

I had these 3 codes, [P0440, P0441, P0442], when I first bought my truck.

After replacing the VSV at the canister & replacing the gaskets on top of the fuel tank, it ended up needing the canister.

Those codes on my truck took 500 miles + to come back when I was trying to fix it. I ended up taking it to the dealership, and they couldn't pinpoint the problem.

Did you do the 9v battery test before replacing the VSV on the canister?

Did you just partially lower the gas tank to replace the overfill check valve gasket on top of the gas tank or did you remove the gas tank completely to do it?

I know it's been a while but when you replaced the VSV and overfill check valve gasket, do you remember if the same codes came back or if it was a different code?

What you can do to make sure that the top of the gas tank isn't leaking is to squirt some soapy water on the top and see if it bubbles, if it doesn't it rules out one of the plastic openings being broken at the top of the tank.

After removing the gas tank skid, did you have to disconnect anything else (hoses, other lines, etc.) to lower the gas tank in order to squirt soapy water around the overfill check valve?

How did you go about pressurizing the gas tank to see if the overfill check valve gasket was leaking to see the air bubbles in the soap? Hand held pump?

My isolated P0441 code was fixed with a second-hand purge valve. Resolved immediately and forever.

it makes it very very difficult to diagnose this issue without access to the gas tank pressure sensor. I am wondering if the 30 dollar cloaned totoya scan tools on amazon will have access to it or bidirecitonal control to the evap solonoids.

I've been having this code lingering for way to long. its been on the back of my mind. Hopefully ill have time to tackle it soon. its not my truck so it doens't get my highest priority. all though its something i am interested in solving. hah

I didn't test the VSV. I just replaced it. I removed the entire gas tank to replace the overfill check valve, gaskets, and look at the hoses really well after using soapy water to see if it would produce bubbles, which it didn't. I first took down the canister and inspected it, and found no damage prior to removing the gas tank.

You can squirt soapy water on some hoses without lowering the tank or removing the skid. I drove it around for about 20 minutes, while idling I squirted some water on the hoses I could see to check for leaks.

Leaks on top of the tank are rare in moderate to cool climates. Mostly they happen in really warm and dry climates such as Las Vegas and Phoenix. Utah is kind of in the middle.

My definitive fix was the canister. After replacing all those parts on top the gas tank, and the vsv, I decided to call uncle and take it to the dealer so they could have a shot. They couldn't figure it out after having it 48 hours, even with a smoke test but concluded that the most likely cause was the canister was leaking inside itself. Didn't pay anything, replaced the canister for $50 and the light has not returned in 100,000 miles

I'm not sure the orientation on the 01-02 rear canister, but its the one nearer the firewall on earlier years.

It should be labeled on your vacuum diagram on the underside of your hood.

Doesn't mean that there isn't more wrong with the evap system, but certainly one big problem here... Hopefully this blasted code doesn't come back on. fingers crossed!

I know it’s been a while, but did you resolve this? I have an isolated 0441 and can’t pump more than 2 seconds of gas without it shutting off.
