Park brake issues

I have a steep driveway. I use my parkbrake everytime. It has been adjusted by the dealership once and is not holding again, 2 weeks after adjustment. I am use to Land Cruisers, once adjusted the PB hold for years! Is it a ****ty set-up on the 4 Runner or does it take several adjustments before the cable stops stretching and holds?

Thanks,
Daryl

Mine is weak too. I haven't had mine adjusted yet (thanks for reminding me) but it won't hold on level ground if I'm in Drive or Reverse.

Mine is weak as well....brought it up to the service department and they said it was "normal."

"AHHHHH, my car is rolling down a hill with e-brake on." Service department: "It's normal!"

WTF, really! The e-brake should hold the vehicle and prevent it from rolling.

Live in flat area. Never use it normally. Went to mountains this past weekend. Used it on a very steep incline. Got out of car and it was fine. Then, got back in, and OF COURSE :nono:, forgot to release it. Proceeded gently up the obstacle with brake ON and truck still went. Now I know I am an idiot for forgetting to release it, but in this situation, it should not have been able to move up the hill without me releasing it...if it was on enough to hold the truck from rolling backwards down a steep incline.

Would be nice if the truck would beep at me if I tried to put it in gear if the brake was still on. The thing beeps at every other frekin situation!

Other vehicles I have had will not budge no matter what (except for the Subaru Outback...real bad ebrake on those things).

It blows my mind that e-brakes are not better than they are on some vehicles...seems like safety 101 to me.

If you engage your e-brake and put the vehicle in drive, it should not move under light to moderate pressure on the accelerator. That's basically the test method we use here in NY during the annual state inspection for all motor vehicles.

Well then I guess mine needs a check also. Anybody know how to adjust the cable without taking to the dealer? Is it an easy thing to do?

It's pretty easy on the 4th gen..but I'm not sure if they changed it on the 5th gen.

It's the same I'm guessing... (my Parking Brake sucks also)

e) Turn the shoe adjuster so that it expands until the disc locks.

(Dark Arrow) Shoe Adjuster Contracts

(White Arrow) Shoe Adjuster Expands

(f) Turn the shoe adjuster so that it contracts until the disc can rotate smoothly.

Standard:

8 notches

(g) Check that there is no brake drag against the shoe.

There is also steps to adjust the Parking Brake pedal Travel and etc. but since these are new vehicles, should be no reason to have to mess with those settings.

Forget the e-brake. Put it in 4-low then park. It will never roll. I've had e-brakes fail on two different vehicles (not Toyota) and both rolled and did some damage. I don't trust them. Its another good reason to own an automatic transmission.
