Phone book problem in hands-free calling

Hi folks,

I've had this problem for a while, I have the 12 LE version with the JBL head unit, I've paired it up with my phone via blue-tooth and it works fine, I've also transfered my phone contact to the car and I can see all the contact in the head unit phone book using the buttons, but when I tried to use the voice command and make a phone call from the contact list, it's always empty. Have anybody else also experienced this problem?

Just did the 1st maintenance and they wouldn't give a free oil change at 5000 miles :roadkill: had to pay by myself...

I have that issue sometimes. I usually just wait until I can restart the vehicle and it works. Other than that I have to repair the phone but restarting the vehicle work for me. Don't know if it is the prescribed remedy but works for me

I'm using an iPhone and I have no issues. I use "dial by name" and then say name. It works fine for me, I'm on ios 5.1.1 with JBL nav (2010 4rnr)

I have a HTC EVO 4G LTE and I use "dial by name" everyday with no problem. I am on Android ice cream sammich

I use a windows phone, probably that's the problem.

I'll try to borrow a Android or an iPhone and try it.

Had similar problems with my 2010 TE with nav. Dealer agreed to replace head unit. That's a whole other story. Took 6 months and 4 service appointments, some yelling at the stupid service agent and finally a call to the vice president. Finally got the correct unit installed. Works like a charm now.

The entune / nav in my 2012 is the biggest piece of crap ever. It's getting yanked out in the next couple of weeks for something better.

Woooaaaa I have head good things about Entune.

Hi Dongbeiner,

I too have had similar problems with my "Hands free, voice command" nav system, but the problem is usually simple.

1st, let's verify that you have a good signal strength, so drive to where you know you have 4 bars on your phones signal strength bar graph icon.

Now, shut the truck OFF. Go to *menu* on your phone. Now, go to *Settings*. Find *Wireless & Networks *. Now scroll down until you see, "Bluetooth", and make certain that, that's checked/selected.

Also, make sure that "Airplane Mode" is turned OFF. Now go to your phones homescreen and make sure you see the Bluetooth icon in the status bar.

Now restart the truck; watch the Nav screen. In a few seconds, you should see, "Searching for bluetooth devices". If it says, "unable to find bluetooth device", go to *Menu* on your phone. Now, press *Settings*. see "Wireless & networks" (I'm using Android, but they all have the same basic functions).

Now this time, scroll down to *Manage Bluetooth*, and select where it says; "make bluetooth discoverable". All that does is send out multiple radio frequencies, to make it easy for your nav to recognize a familiar signal frequency.

They should "Link-up" automatically. Now press & release the "Talk button" on the steering wheel. Now say....Dial XYZ, OR dial Mom. The prompter ( a Ladies voice) should say, "choose a line number, or correction".

That should work, but if she says "That contact does not exsist, and you know it does exsist, you may need to "Refresh" the truck's nav phonebook; but don't worry, it's easy! Just press the large phone button on the dashboard, next to the nav screen.
Now, see 4 options, touch number 4, "Refresh phonebook".

All that does is Links all the contacts in your phone, with the contacts (both old & new) in the nav system's contact list.

YOU'RE DONE!

Mine works fine.

My biggest complaint is with caller ID. My phonebook is imported and my contacts are there. However, when I receive a phone call from one of my contacts, the system only shows the phone number with no name.

Hi WIT4R,

The Nav system in our 4Runners are not phones, but merely "Bluetooth Devices", that operate off of "Radio frequency waves". So they aren't designed to have "Caller ID" of their own.

When a call comes in, they get they're contact information from the information that we program into our phones contact list; exactly the way we enter the contact name & number. For instance, let's say that I have girlfriend by the name of, Mary Smith.

Well, the phone company has her listed as "Mary Smith" and that's the way caller ID customers will recieve calls from her phone; so far, I've only seen "landlines" capable of displaying the name and number, cell phones seem to be limited to displaying the number, and sometimes, the callers location.

But from a cell phone, caller ID can only display the phone number, I am responsable for entering / connecting a name to that number, via my contact list.

I don't even have to name her "Mary Smith", I could put in the name, "Sweet Pea", and that's what would appear on my phone screen, (and Nav screen), each time she calls me from that number. Please remember, your Nav system can only display "EXACTLY", what you programmed in your phone's contact list; nothing more, nothing less.

So you may need to "Refresh" the contact list in your navigation system, if you're not able to see whose calling you, or can only see the number in the Display screen.

Again, the same thing I told "Dongbeiner", there is nothing wrong your equipment, just needs a lil' T.L.C. Greg, (rigtec) Cheers!
