PIC of the difference of new vs superceded head gasket in the 1GR-FE

There is much debate on why the part numbers for the head gasket changed, be it due to a new supplier, or a new design... or both. I can definitively say the design was changed. I don't know if the supplier was also. These are both OEM Toyota gaskets.

I asked my mechanic to snap a photo of the 03-05 head gasket, vs the one that replaced it from 06 on, this applies to ALL 1GR-FE engines of these years.

I am not a mechanic or engineer, I am simply providing this photo so you can see the physical differences of each gasket.

Perhaps someone who knows why these changes were made can chime in. Notice the curvature that goes with each cylinder vs the straight edge of the old. Also the Coolant channels are of different shape. It appears that they didn't add or remove any materials overall, they just placed it in different locations. Forgive this pic as its a photo of a photo.

The new is on the left, old on the right.., duh.

From what we gather here, yes. Much more common. That's one of the reasons I was able to get this picture. I drive an 05

Issue was fixed from 2006 model and on. Well known on the forum.

I’ll attach my gasket pics as well.

I can’t tell the difference between the two except for some extra gasket on the top and bottom of 2 and top of 6, nowhere near the actual cylinder.

Old gasket on top. New below. Drivers side. Cylinder 2 leaking exhaust into coolant when cold but not anymore when hot 180k miles 05 4 runner. Build date 02/05. Misfire cylinder 2 and rough idle when starting up and smoothened out after 30 seconds or so. Gasket came from kit 04112-32720.

Did you guys resurface the heads? I’m going to do it at home since were on lockdown. I don’t know if the machine shop is open to resurface the heads. I’m going to check them with a straight edge. I would feel better resurfacing them but have done head gaskets before without a resurface when its been just a bad gasket but no overheating causing a warped head.

I took my heads to a machine shop, but I didn't have total failure so the engine didn't overheat. The machine shop cleaned them up and put in new valve stem seals, but didn't need to resurface them. I think getting the mating surface really clean would be more important if the engine didn't overheat.

Yeah from experience, if its just a headgasket failure, with no overheating, the heads have been fine but I still had them take a little bit off just in case. Just wantes to reassure myself.

No resurface. Just cleaned up and pressure tested.

I noticed that my drivers side (left) cam shaft tensioner has a few cm of extension whereas my passenger side (right) the cam shaft tensioner is completely depressed (seems that the chain is tighter.

Anyone notice this? Should I replace the cam shaft chain?

I noticed the FSM gives dimensions to measure the head bolts but doesn't mention they must be replaced. What is everyone doing, replacing or reusing head bolts?

My 2005 SR5 V6 (150,000 miles) has no HG issues (no misfirtes) - knock on wood. Mine runs like it did in March of 2005 - perfect. I read HG problems happens in 1% of the 4runners.:guitar3:

Just checked my DS for 10th time this month. Oil is clear and clean - no sign of water. No use of oil either. Amazing Toyota!
