Not trying to be a dick or ruin anyone's fun but this is the reason why the environmentalist are trying to shut down the pine barrens to motor vehicle traffic. The pines are not a place for you to "wheel". At least not anymore. Yes, there are plenty of trails and roads to ride on, but please by all means, RESPECT the pines. Pack out what you pack in! Tread lightly! STAY ON the trail. If you take a go around, beware..YOU CAN receive a very high dollar ticket for going through the go around since it is NOT part of the road or trail. The rangers are fed up with "wheelers" and out of staters who think the pines are their personal playground. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE taking a drive through the pines and enjoying the sandy trials and roads, but because of all the bad apples who have destroyed the pines, the law is hassling everyone. Open Trails NJ has worked hard to get the Motorized Access Plan delayed and trails reopened. But their fight isn't done and people "wheeling" and acting fools in the pines does not help the cause. Again, please RESPECT the pines, tread lightly, pack out what you pack in, stay on the trail, yield to horses and allow them to pass, do not dust out hikers and mountain bikers, do not take go arounds or go in areas listed as "no motorized vehicles" by the signs hanging on the trees.
You're not being a dick. I think it should be a given not to be reckless while inside and to not leave trash. Unfortunately there will always be people who will do so and ruin it for the rest of us. For now all we can do is enjoy it and respect the pines while we still have access.

Definitely. At the rate of which things are going, it doesn't look good for those of us who enjoy taking scenic drives through Wharton. The DEP is still trying to force the Motorized Access Plan on everyone. There's actually a meeting this Friday at the Pinelands Commission at 9:30am to discuss the M.A.P. It's such bs but all the bad "wheelers" have ruined it for the good "wheelers".

The map you're talking about isn't the M.A.P. (motorized access plan) that I was talking about. I know which physical map you're talking about. It does suck. So many more roads in the forest than there are listed on the map.

I was saying that it would be really easy to find yourself on an unauthorized trail but still think you were on the right one if you're not careful. I'm against the idea in its entirety, it's a shame what the hillbillies do back there in Wharton that it has come to this.
But yeah, I was referring to how difficult it would be to adhere to the proposed plans usable roads in the woods because sometimes trails are so close together it's easy to mistake one for another

Sorry to bring this back from the dead where is this pit. I been to wharton 3 times and could never find it. If anything send me a pm. Am looking to stretch my runners leg and hopefully not lose another license plate lol. Might go tomorrow or next week.

It doesn't exist anymore. You're about a 8 months too late. A Walmart sits there now.
this is true. However, there is a trailhead to some other nice trails just a few miles down the road that I hit up often

It's been a couple of years since i have been there...when I had
my FJ, i went with several bruisers probably 40 or so times over the years...back in the day it was nice...we did clean-ups for the rangers and they appreciated it....as time when by, the forest slowly got destroyed by those who would rather destroy the environment and keep it or maintain it...
the trails are endless...some on maps, others not...you can get lost even when you know the place.....thousands of acres....and as many trails...
i have lots of great memories of this place...some good, some bad...
water in the cabin smells like dirty cigars for at least 6 months...lolll...
tight bridal paths, lots of pinstripping but all worth it for lunch at the Pic...
i'll probably never go back...but maybe some wings at the Pic....

Hey all, wish I seen this before. I'm going to pine barrens this weekend. First time ever. I excited to explore. Will there be any more group meetings to pine barrens ? Any tips for me ?
I'm down to meet up with locals for a trip. Especially with someone who is familiar with pine barrens or Wharton. But is t Wharton basically pine barrens ? As in pine barrens is the actual million square feet

where exactly are these trails?
follow 322 down and before you hit the overpass it will be on your left. there are quite a few trailheqds. just choose any one and turn on it. they all eventually lead back to the main fire road
