Pitbull Rescuer's New Project/Build Thread

Jealous! I've been looking at getting a 2nd 4runner in 4wd as a trail ride and keep my 2wd as my DD, and id love it in the imperial jade!

Assuming you've got got the time, it looks like a good way to learn alot about working on 4Runners.

I say you put a Supra motor in it.

Funny you said that actually. Not a chance n hell it's happening but I talked about that earlier today. It'd be pretty bad to have a twin turbo, paddle shifted 3rd Gen. But Singtoe and Clownmeat have skills far superior to mine.

That said, if I can afford it, I may have a pretty cool swap figured out for it.

$50 says he is buying IanB's 3.0TD!.. That would be awesome.

Good news, bad news.

Good news: had two of my buddy's come by, one owns an Indy shop in Philly.. The other owns an Indy shop right near my house but he was a Toyota master tech before he opened it. Both looked at the motor and the heads, they looked at the previous "mechanic's" write up and neither think there is a bottom end issue.

So, plan was to bolt the heads back on, compression test the engine and go from there. If it was okay, I was going to send the heads out for some freshening up and send the injectors to Witch Hunter for their magic tough.

Bad news: only 1 of the head gaskets came back with the parts pile. And the timing belt and head bolts are missing too. Not the end of the world but I was planning on bolting it back together with the old parts just to compression test it. Now I'm out $119 for a head gasket, timing belt and head bolt set. But, I'm still optimistic that the motor is good. Fingers crossed.

So, I got home from work tonight and dug in a little bit. Dis-assembled both heads. They're headed to the machine shop later this week to be hot tanked and decked. I'm going to lap the valves and re-assembled them myself.

Da proof :)

Dropping the heads off tomorrow at the machine shop to be hot tanked and decked.
Anyone think I could have the valve covers and intake manifold hot tanked too? I think it would clean them up nicely before painting them.

Subscribed!

We have the EXACT same vehicle minus the leather seats in yours. I definitely want to see where this goes.

My vote is on the 4.7 V8 swap.

Cheers!

Slight delay. Talked to the guy at the machine shop, quoted me $330 to clean and mill (resurface) the heads. Seemed way excessive so I held off. Stopped by another machine shop yesterday, older guy that's been there since 1970. $210 to clean and resurface them, $405 for him to clean, resurface, do the valve job and reassemble them. Much more reasonable IMO. So I'll be dropping them off there on Thursday.

I also ordered yesterday:

Full Gasket Set
Timing Belt, Tensioner and Idler Pulley
ARP Head Bolt Set
Valve spring keeper set (lost one during disassembly, figured I may lose more during assembly.)

Side note: the buyer for my '97 backed out. She was apparently trying to get a personal loan from her credit union which they were unable to approve. Not a biggie but it would've motivated me to move faster on this one.

Pretty clever with the cardboard filing cabinet. Makes me wish I had done my own valves. Do you have a bench grinder to buff those back to beautiful?
