BTW, the cardboard trick works really well with keeping minitruck transfercase bolts organized. Same for timing chain swap, cylinder head .... Just sayin' ...
 
Update: Finally dropped the heads off at the machine shop this morning on my way to my office. They should be done by Wednesday. I decided to let them clean the valves up too.

I was going to have them clean the intake manifold and valve covers too but the they quoted me an additional $200 to do so. I think I'll clean them up myself for that money.

My son's baseball team (which I coach) has a bye this weekend so I'm hoping to be able to dive into it pretty good this weekend.

And if this wasn't enough, I bought a 3rd 3rd Gen, picking it up tomorrow. This one also has a bad motor.
 
A 3rd, 3rd gen 4Runner? Wow. Always enjoy seeing what you do, but you know we will need to see some pics....

Is this a hobby, or a small business?
 
That's alota 3rd gens! One of the best vehicle platforms out there though, one of the better vehicles you could be collecting!

No real pics to see yet, nothing changed since the last pics I posted. I'll take some after the heads come back and I start putting her back together.

It's a hobby. I write mortgages for a living, after 11 years of this, a lot of gray hair and about 50 more pounds, I need something to take my mind off of it. I do usually make a few bucks when I'm done with them though. I've owned about 40+ cars and 9 motorcycles over the past 20 years. I just love these Toyotas though, they're well built, easy to work on and people aren't afraid to buy them with high miles one them.

If all this isn't enough, I'm also looking to pick up a T100 too.
 
Yeah, I could have told you it is IJM--it's just like mine but with the fancy painted flares which my '99 SR5 does not have. Of course, I have a motor in one piece that runs. You definitely have plenty to do this summer.

I have a pretty busy summer coming at me, but I'll try to help if you need it.

Cleaned the sh*t out of the valve covers and the intake manifold tonight. Why is it blue? Because my 7 year old son who's "helping" me decided he wanted it blue. So blue it is. At least it'll match the plug wires :art:

Before you know it he will be on here asking for advice on doing a lift to his 5th gen!!

What kind of paint is on those valve covers? they look awesome imop
 
He just told my wife tonight we have to keep the black one (5 speed) until he gets older because he wants it. He thinks it's cool that I shift it and he likes how big it is. My dad got me into cars so it's only right.

Thanks. The valve covers are VHT Burnt Copper. I like them too but a few people were breaking my balls about them. I don't think the blue/burnt copper is a great combo but it's what he wanted.

I dig the blue, but not the bronze.
Replace the bronze with black, or even blue.

I like the burnt copper more actually. I like the blue too, just not crazy about them together. But my little man likes them and he's beaming with pride that "we" are rebuilding an engine so they're staying.
 
There are definitely worse things he could be into than spending quality time with pops. With kids, you pick your battles and try never to break their spirit. He wants blue and bronze, he gets blue and bronze.
 
Hey man,

I just saw this thread. I assume this is the 4Runner we spoke about?

Good luck with the head issues. It is clearly way cheaper to fix when you are doing the work yourself!
