Plastidip roof rails

I have been searching the threads and cant find if anyone has done this yet. So...has anyone done this yet? I am looking for some pics. I just started plasti dippiing the emblems and I am hooked. I decided I wanted no chrome left. I am not sure if I want them painted or gone.

I think the emblems would look better painted vs gone. You be the guinnea pig and then take lots of pics so I can decide if it's something I'll do or not when I get my 4runner ;)
 
There are a coupe of members that have blacked out their chrome rails, but I'm not sure if anyone has used plastidip to do it yet. I'm not sure how durable the plastidip would be with aftermarket crossbars. One reason I haven't done it.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago. If you click on my profile photos I may have one on there of the end result. I can take some closer pics tomorrow for ya. They look awesome, way better minus all the chrome!!
 
i did mine a few weeks ago. removed the rails (8 bolts) from the truck, then applied 8 coats of dip.

definitely prefer the look compared to chrome.

i have a thule rack and the one of the feet marred the dip a little when I installed it, but I'm the only one that would notice. I imagine that if i'm moving the thule rack often then the dip wouldn't hold up very well, but since I set it and forget it I'm not too worried.

i'll post some pics later.
 
Thank-you OP... I have been searching this for a while and turned up no results. I always search my butt off before posting in fear of the backlash... Especially after [MENTION=51186]philsey[/MENTION] recently made fun of my inability to manually start my 4Runner.

Any long-term durability reports or pics?
 
looks great but not sure it is going to hold up to use... you should plasti dip that area code sticker... or just peel it off:tongue1:
 
Here are my pics. Wanted to show where the thule rack foot scraped the dip off when I installed it. Other than that I'm quite happy with how it looks. Durability is questionable for a roof rack, but I figured that would be the case before I did it. I might end up stripping the chrome and actually painting the rails someday.

I plan to do mine but im going to have them spray with a bed liner. as soon as I can get them bass turds off. I found a tread with good pics on removing the rack, but I was not succesfull, I think you have to get a little western with and not scared of braking it to get them off

To date my rack has gotten zero use. This is really more of just a tie me over kind of move until I can save up the ca$h for a Bajarack Long Rack :):):)

And the 805 sticker is actually a special run of Firestone Beer, only made available in its native 805, so I rock it haha. It's called "805" and is delish. Look it up :p
 
I plasti dipped mine and they have been that way for about 10000 miles and have had no problem. I put my canoe up there weekly.
 
Seems like the over-all consensus from anyone who has actually dipped their rails is that it has held up well. Anyone of you live where you get a lot of snow and ice? I don't doubt they will hold up well in the summer, but winter scares me.

I painted mine. Took them off and sanded them down then sprayed adhesion promoter on them. Then used Krylon Fusion at least 7-8 coats. I plasti-dip every other chrome piece.
