Thinking I'm going to regear my Runner. So now the debate is on going to either a 4.30 setup or a 4.56. I'm running 265/75-16 tires. The best research I've found on what to gear at was (current gear ratio x new tire size)/stock tire size. So for me that would be (4.10 x 31.6)/30.6 which would equal 4.23.

Thoughts?

Did you ever decide?

My 4runner was QUICK with the 265/70/17's. Going up to the 285/70/17's made a HUGE difference. Since the tires, all the armor I have added has had no noticable loss in power. Just those big dang tires.

But for your poll, I'd say try the 4.56 if you're going to buy new gears and everything.

If you can source 4.30's for CHEAP locally (maybe DeathCougar will have a 4.30 gear blowout extravaganza sale), why not?

Having re-geared to 4.56. It's a compromise between off road and mileage, especially running 285's duratracs.

I still get about 270ish all freeway and drops to 210ish mixed city/freeway and trail I don't even count I just bring 2 full rotopax now (extra 8ish gals)

I figured the superchargers power would compensate for 4:30 gears so that was off the table.

Just remember my supercharger was a gen 2 trd unit, and honestly it did not run perfect until I upgraded the fuel with 7th injector and controlled by urd's black box. Gadget is the man and sent a pretty good fuel map initially but I still needed dyno time to dial it in, to the specific parts I had installed, type of fuel (yeah Cali blend), and driving style. So that might factor in with extra cost, it's just not slap in the supercharger and everything is good to go.

Also i have an 02 runner and I actually had to replace my transmission with IPT unit and yes all their upgrades. My oem unit planetary gear exploded like a grenade, yes the planetary gear exploded (the shop was nice enough to show me the carnage). Not sure if the extra torque from the supercharger had an effect, my driving style on trails or a combination of both had its effect, also my girl is a heavy pig, triple locked, full armored, and sometimes a rtt.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I definitely appreciate all the info and experience. I could change my mind a 100 times between now and when anything does happen. I'm working on some other investment stuff, so all extra funds would be going that way. Probably no fun money for a while, but I think in the long run it will pay off!

Something may have to happen sooner than later. Just had a trip up and over the pass and while I did get just over 20mpgs for the trip, I wanted to rip my AT out and shoot it with a shotgun as I was going over.

I told you....haha You'll be very happy with the SC and it really does make the 4runner more fun to drive. I was driving behind SantaCruzRunner last weekend to go wheeling and I could hear all of his downshifts with the AT on the freeway, while my 4runner would keep it's gear the whole time. We are both on 33's and 4.30 gearing and it makes a big difference, especially around any incline.

I am having the same dilemma, kind of, it is for my 1996 Tacoma. I already own a 4.56 front diff, as well as a rear 4.30 elocker diff. Currently I am running 33x10.5 tires, 4.10 gears and a manual trans. I can get a 4.30 front diff for less than $200 or get a 4.56 elocker from ECGS for $665. For the time being I plan to do far more highway miles to go camping, kayaking and MTBing than full on wheeling. In the future as the condition degrades I will wheel it more and more. At that time I will get some armor. Using the 4.30 will get me back to factory while 4.56 will help even more. BTW we are talking about a 100rpm increase at the current 2000rpm speed for 4.30 and a 200rpm increase at the current 2000rpm speed for 4.56. Of course these increases would be double at 4000rpm. Right now for the sake of money I might just go with 4.30 and move on, unless someone convinces me otherwise. Thoughts anyone?

Can you simply take a read dif geared at 4.30 and insert the ring and pinions from a 4.10 to make it a 4.10 or are the housings different?
