For your driving and lift/tires/armor I would say 4.56's would be perfect. No need to jump to 4.88's at this point. I have 4.30's and 285's and I could stand the power loss. Even with 265's I really didn't like the power loss. 4.88's wouldn't be horrible since you have a second car and don't have to DD the 4runner all over the place. Plus it gives you the option of 285's.

In all honesty though, a SC would solve your issue. It's a bit more expensive. but it's so much more fun. 4.56's may put you back at stock power, but that isn't that great to begin with. I'm fine driving my 4runner with 285's and just the SC now. It's a much more enjoyable ride and I had no problems driving to 7000' for a weekend trip. The 7th injector will be next and that's a whole new aspect of the SC, but you really can be fine with just the SC as long as you take the necessary measures. I really want to drive a geared 4runner just to see the difference, but I imagine the SC will be more fun.

If you decide on 4.30's, I have the ring and pinion for both front and rear that are just sitting in boxes, I picked them up before I had a S/C'd 4runner....

With 4.88 AND a supercharger, you could go to 37s.

Just sayin...

Yeah, but then you are far more likely to break driveline parts. So that would mean a complete, custom drivetrain for reliability.

OP, you should do what you want. The reality is that these two-ton 4Runners with the aerodynamics of a brick, will never be fast. Unless you were to increase the power, say... tenfold. Of course that would be an all-custom drivetrain too. :biggrin2:

I'm not looking for fast or anything close to it. Just want to be able to go over mountain passes without having to floor it to get the tranny to downshift.

YES, custom drivetrain! A transmission from a locomotive and driveshafts from .120 wall DOM do it, you think?

This is all an excellent plan, Hepar. Looking forward to the build.

4.30s and 265s blows goats (I have proof). I vote for 4.56 if you've got a five speed, 4.88 if it's an automatic.

4.3 on 265's doesn't blow goats, I've been running that for 4 years and it's fine. Granted I don't do much if any off-roading, just some mountain roads, but it doesn't blow goats. KidVermicious, you are marginalizing the power of the term "blowing goats" through over use. Don't ruin it for us!

I do agree with this though, if you are going to go through the trouble and expense of regearing, make it a good one. Regearing from 4.1 to 4.3 doesn't seem worth it.

You probably never get the chance to put your foot in it or climb a real hill, being from back east and all, so you don't know. I know from goat blowing, and I'm telling you it blows goats.

I REALLY do not want to open a new thread asking 4.56s or 4.88s, and am having trouble locating a thread or post with my similar situation, but:

Until I graduate from college this year, my 4Runner is my daily driver.

I currently have the lovely 4.10 gears and 315/75R16's. Yeah, I live in the flatlands so it's manageable, but not for long. I am considering doing 4.88 gears because I always hear about people saying 35's + Auto Tranny = 4.88s. But this thing spends a lot of time on the interstate as I work in another city.

Sorry for the thread hijack!!

Fear not. I've been ignoring the thread for a while now. Currently looking through Craigslist at used Honda Civics. I plan on going crazy with it. I found out that the mods can be super cheap. The local Autozone has all sorts of upgrades for next to nothing. Plus I'll be getting around 30mpgs. See you guys in the Stupid Cars thread!

Do not fear the RPM. RPM is your friend. The 5vze LIKES to rev. And it isn't about whether you rock crawl or mall crawl, it's about keeping your RPMs inside the power band. The 5vze/auto is an ok combination as long as you're in the factory ratios, but even those are low (in the name of fuel mileage). Look at your HP/torque curve and you'll see where the usable power is. To get your RPMs into the meat of that curve you want higher diff gears. Remember that your 315s aren't just bigger around than stock, they're also also significantly heavier, so even just to get back to factoryesque performance, you need to gear higher than the factory gear-to-tire ratio. I say if you're going to regear and have 315s with the auto, go with the 4.88s all day. No question about it.

That actually sounds fun. Add flame vinyls and stick on hood vents? I also assume it'd be much easier to have the hood scoop rather than the 4Runner ones. All you need is a little super glue!

Thank you for the upfront answer. Would I notice faster city response? I feel like a moron revving high and going nowhere in the city. I get passed and people go around me frequently. I've given up going the speed limit, it takes too long to get there :p

Be a man, Get a turbo.:pimp:

Haha, unsure if this was intended for me, but I'll reply in case. Trust me, I've strongly considered charging the runner, in any form whether it be S/C, etc. I just had a child so the money that could've/would've been invested into that, now goes into baby food and diapers.
