I went more "old school" look to match the actual FJ grill look.

I used heavy gauge expanded metal. I stole it from our metal shop. Pretty much scrap to them.

I then coated it heavily in bed liner to give it that rugged look. I think it turned out well.

I only have crappy cell phone pictures. No TOYOTA badge yet either.

Awesome! Just ordered a 6x48" flat black powdercoated sheet with the small holes (for that OEM look) for $14 in the "scratch and dent" section!!

That's a strange coincidence. The piece of material that I purchased to do the grille on my '97 a few weeks ago was a 6"x48" flat black powdercoated sheet for $14 from the "scrach and dent" section. Hopefully that's a different piece than the one I bought, rather than a delay on the owner's part in updating his online inventory list.

That size a piece is just the right amount to do one of these, but be careful cutting, because there is no room for error. Gotta love that "scrap pile".

Thanks for the link! Unless I missed it in there, I didn't see how you mounted the mesh to the grill. Would you mind sharing your technique with us? Or keeping that one to yourself? lol

There's lots of ways to do it, but I didn't want any hardware showing at the front of the grille, so what I did was buy some of these:

Then I removed the white adhesive tape from the backs, and used a dremel tool with a cutting wheel to rough up the back of them. Next I went around the inside lip of the grille and roughed it up in 14 spots...

Then I used plastic welder (a type of epoxy) to permanently attach the mounting bases to the inside of the grille. Last, I left at least one row of perforated holes on the grille material extending past the inner lip of the grille. I used 8" zip ties looped through those holes, and then through the mounting bases. It is a very secure method of mounting the grille material, and it's completely invisible from the outside.

I guess a picture is worth 1,000...

And yeah, as you said, lots of ways to do it. The way that I was thinking about was essentially like you did, but I was thinking of small metal "L" brackets to zip-tie to. But I think I like your way better with the little plastic bases. It's lighter that way, and a little more low profile. Thanks again man.

Hey thanks man! Ya, I started by drafting out the letters on paper. I liked the look the fj 40 emblem, but wanted the letters to be stretched a little wider than they are tall. After drawing up the size and shape I liked for the letters, I traced them onto the plastic, and then cut everything out by hand. It would have been so much easier with the right tools. But I used what I had available. I like the white on black, and I especially like the size. From T to A its 18.5". The aluminum strip was the only thing I had to buy, so I leterally spent like $6 on the entire project!

They bases are Gardner Bender Part # 45-MBUVB, Mounting Base, 5 pack, 1" x 1" Cable Tie Mounting Bases. I bought them at my local ACE Hardware for $2.29/5pk. Here's a couple links to the actual product I used:

Here's my attempt at copying 1985Taylor1925's grill. I had it a little easier. Used a laser cutter to cut my letters using ABS plastic.

I've got another set of letters that I cut using 1/8 inch acrylic. Figure I will help someone out that is looking to do the mod. Lets are the same size as my letters excluding the thickness. First PM gets them! Pictures are below. The only rule is you have to post pictures once you complete your grill!!!

Why didn't I think of that. I have bunches of those little sticky doohickeys. You're a fart smeller... I mean, a smart feller...

Gosh, I know I'm going back a ways pulling up this post, but just wanted to ask, what did you model your letters after? I want something similar, perhaps just a smidgin smaller, but the same letters/font essentially. I know you cut these yourself, just wondering if you had a starting point and/or if there's an emblem out there that's similar.

Cheater! Looks nice and clean. I wish I had had access to a laser cutter for mine. But I do love mine for the sentimental value. It was a pain to make and would probably never make one by hand again. What font name did you use?

I actually didnt use a font. I just knew I wanted the letters to be slightly wider than they were tall, and I wanted them to be blocky rather than rounded. So I went back to jr high shop class and did a little drafting on paper. Came up with a design I liked and went with it. But it looks like blonde1boarder found a font that looks similar to my letters when he made his with a laser cutter.

I really, really like yours, but I have never drafted, and wouldn't know where to start. I might have to find someone who has those sort of skills and beg them or pay them to do it for me. The 79+ FJ40 emblem is the next best thing, IMO, but still not large enough.

Yeah thats almost exactly what mine looks like, just bigger. I wanted to buy that emblem initially but not for $75
