Preferred Coolant for 22R-Toyota Red?

Looking to help out a friend with coolant flush on his 87 4TR.
Has 22R with some old and nasty looking green coolant.
Have heard some say best to stick with older style green coolant in the 22R rather than switch to the more modern Toyota Red.
Any truth to that?

there is. these didn't come with toyota red, so no reason to spend the money on it. btw, i assume the same as BAT user sarki?

fwiw, i've put just about 97k miles on '87 4runner #1, all using generic green coolant. no cooling or heating issues, and it includes a 2016 cross-country trip in july, with a 4-day stay in death valley (126 *F the day we got there) with wheeling. 8500 miles in 31 days, with ambient temps generally in the 90s and 100s.

also, sadly, you might get more response on yotatech, as the t4r forum has lost a lot of traffic over the last two years, and is now pretty lame.

As true as, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Green has worked on mine for 34 years. It may very well work for another 30.

We do not know how compatible the materials in our cooling system with the red coolant, nor how thorough to flush to prevent issues.

Thanks for response, appreciate the feedback.
Been running the green coolant in my 86 pickup for the past 10 years but my friend is insistent there are anti-corrosion benefits to switching over to the Toyota red and wanted a hand in flushing out the green to replace with red.
His money so all good but got me wondering if maybe he was right.

I believe my 1988 did have red coolant when I bought it new. I eventually killed the water pump by flushing and then filling with Prestone green with "silicone silicate formula". That formula was essentially abrasives meant to keep your radiator clean, but wore out the pump seals in the process. That was decades ago, and I don't think anyone uses silicates anymore, so it probably doesn't matter today.

Found this on 22RE Performance website. With years of experience and a solid reputation rebuilding 22R series motors I most definitely value their opinion as well.
