Engine package is scary, nice packaging of coolers and hoses but where's the engine? I would hate to have to do anything to engine; plugs, valve cover, can't even see them!
 
It will probably be good. We are talking Toyota after all. The tailgate is a bummer and the engine is intimidating. I am more curious to see how these engines will age. Will we be rebuilding them, or will we be swapping in junkyard V8's out of 2020 Suburbans in 25 years?

Not a chance. If it did we'd most certainly get a gasoline over diesel engine, and if you're gonna by a V6, 5 seater SUV from Toyota with independent front suspension... why wouldn't you buy a 4Runner?
Personally I'm not impressed by it at all. The styling is impressively boring, engine is way too cluttered and way too cramped, and 10 gears in a tranny? That's a little nutty.

Depending on the max rpm of the diesel, you need 10 gears to keep it in the sweet spot. My cummins redlined at 2500rpm and 4 speeds in an auto were not enough. The 5sp wasn’t much better. Huge jump between 3rd and 4th dropping the engine below its torque unless you took it to redline first.

10 gears in a tranny?
Have you driven a modern auto made in the last 10 years? They are way smoother and deliver very consistent power. Huge improvement.
EV’s are putting a lot of pressure on the ICE engine’s to be as efficient as possible. I was watching Jay Leno and he said “we are in the golden age of the ICE engine”. I agree with him 100%. While ICE engines will be around for a long time they are going to be replaced by EV for a large segment of the market.

This new engine 3.4 L is producing 400 hp and 480 ft/lb with the same displacement as the good old 5vz. That engine tech is getting 2x power out of the same displacement. Nothing to sneeze @
As for the styling… yea poop. For sure Toyota is 100% behind the 5th gen 4runner in the US market. They have sold like 11 gazillion of them. Why not continue with that success? They are printing money with the 5th gen 4runner.

In 25 yrs we'll swap in a shoebox sized electric motor and similar sized battery pack, then we'll display the old motor around the campfires and talk about the Good Ol' times...

Yah, the only time we’re going to see this motor is by a half cut or getting them by the US importing companies that do diesel swaps. V8 turbo swaps starting at 50K is not a good price to start with. Money doesn’t grow in trees for me, so yah. So can you imagine how much would a twin turbo V6 cost just for the motor and 10 gear trans? DOLLARS UP THE YING YANG! You could get the 1HZ, 1HD-T, 1HZ-FT, all found from the HDJ80 from 90-98 overseas. If your going naturally aspirated or turbo-diesel, the gains are more pros over the gas engines we have here in the states. When I had my US spec 91 FJ80, I drove to CANADA to buy a half cut. Drove it back to WA and sat in my garage for 2 years. I sold my 80 series and eventually sold the desired 1HD-FT to a guy in ARIZONA. I regret selling that more till this day and I also sold it with the rare 5 spd I got from Australia [emoji1037].

Well yes, because the overwhelming majority of modern cars uses a CVT and have no gears to switch from... that's like half the intention behind them, to have as smooth and consistent power delivery as possible. But that's not what we're looking at here; no diesel on Earth has a CVT
Yes gasoline and diesel engines are becoming pretty efficient - but that being the only criteria used to define a "golden age" I find extremely laughable, especially with modern diesels. There's a dozen other factors to consider such as ease and frequency of maintenance, vehicle longevity, cost of ownership which directly correlates to feasibility and overall practicality of ownership, etc. etc. To me, only pointing at fuel efficiency and focusing on that solely as defining whether an engine is good or not is a very "Californian" way to see things, and very much through rose colored glasses. Regardless, ICE vs EV and the future of ICE are both very heavily a political discussion and one I don't aim to derail the thread with as this isn't the place

Those are 70 series if I recall, I'm not a LC nerd. They're here in the US, or at least there's a couple in my area (I live in a very JDM centric area so hard to tell sometimes), but in either sense they're usually very scarce and nearly impossible to find for sale, at least for a decent price. I would argue it's one of the best looking cars Toyota ever produced - they're about as big as our vehicles but styled like older G Wagons and Land Rovers. And solid axle to boot :faint:
I keep telling myself one day I'll buy one :tsk:

HZJ77HV were JDM (japan domestic market) only, so right hand drive only. A true 77 series land crusier with the 1HZ naturally aspirated 4.2L 6-Cylinder Diesel. 24V electrics throughout.

the HV at the end of model code means full floating rear axle but is also leaf sprung all the way around. So it's old school truck ride, but they did come with suspension seats. the ZX at the end is the lux version. they are very basic trucks compared to the prado version.

the Prado version model code KZJ78 is the light duty version of the same body style but with semi-floating rear.

Both had solid front axles. But the Prado has radius arms front and back and is coil sprung.

the KZJ78 has the 1KZ-T engine smaller 3.0 L 4 cylinder. I'm not sure when (1993 I think) but the 1KZ-TE was used and that is a common rail direct inject turbo, some were intercooled.

anyways.... I really don't know anything about them :)

yea I have searched for them but... it's got to be 25 years or older and.. usually the pickups are beat to hell by the time they are 25 years old. unless you want a fire marshals pickup.

it's tempting but 55K CAD -> 62,285.85 United States Dollar is a lot of money and you know there are other charges getting it across the border. it isn't coming from the duty free shop that is for sure
