Pricing & Preparation: Help me sell my 1999 Limited 4Runner

Hey everyone, I'm Chase and, as the title alludes to, my wife and I are the owners of a 1999 Limited 4WD 4Runner with 166,000 miles on it. I am hoping to sell the vehicle in the next 6 weeks but am incredibly naive when it comes to automotive stuff and am hoping that you all can help me through the process.

I imagine it might be helpful for me to tell you a bit about the vehicle:

My wife purchased it about 4 years ago from a dealership and it has been her daily driver. It has been treated well but not spoiled. Has some minor cosmetic blemishes on the exterior with the worst of it being a small "dent" in the front left bumper due to hitting a small structure in a parking garage. Interior is in good condition, never been smoked in, isn't eaten in on a regular enough basis to have any smells or stains. All in all, aesthetically speaking, the condition of the car is probably just better than "clean" and I think that with a thorough detailing (whatever you all suggest that looks like) it is going to be viewed as a visually attractive vehicle.

I've currently got a phone call into the mechanic so that he can remind me of any work we've done to it in the last 24 months or so, and I can update the thread with it later but, off the top of my head: In the last 2 years we have changed the breaks; just recently cut the rotors (?) because they were warped and causing some serious wobble when breaking; we lost heat at one point and had something replaced (it wasn't a radiator issue), we had a strange clicking noise coming from the dashboard that ended up being a burnt out fan motor (or something), and we replaced a radiator (never overheated). Other than that we've sub-routinely changed the oil. Tires seem to have better than 80% of the original tread.

As far as pricing goes: Edmunds appraises it at $5,022; Kelly Blue Book appraises it at $5,091 and four local 4Runners of similar makes and models are being advertised on Craigslist at the following prices:

1997 2wd limited 162,000 $4,300
1999 4wd limited 226,000 $4,000
2000 4wd limited 144,000 $8,300
2001 4wd limited 185,000 $8,500

So, please, let me know what else I can tell you, and I'd be grateful for any assistance you can offer.

did you happen to also have the transmission flushed at the same time the radiator was replaced?

So, aside from putting together an awesome "for sale" ad (including all the information I round up from the mechanic), and giving it a thorough detailing, I think my biggest issue will be figuring out what price to ask for it.

Is the best thing to do just pick a price that is in the ballpark of the ones being sold in the area?

I personally would advise you not to sell it unless you utterly HAVE to. It's a very dependable vehicle that will last you a good 200k more miles and live in all terrains.
If there isn't anything wrong with your runner and you must sell it, i would say try for 6-6500 but don't go too much lower than 5500 5k at a bare minimum. Bumpers are $50 and take 20 minutes to replace so don't weigh the price too much on that.
The rust under the truck might be used against you in any price debates. Also you really should just keep it... :)

But what do I know, I'm from the Midwest.

Thanks for the response. It really is an exceptional truck but we don't have the luxury of buying another vehicle without selling it, and we really need to improve our fuel economy.

I've been doing a little research and have found the following:

There are 7 other Limited's that are currently for sale in the area ranging from year 1998-2001; when we compare the asking prices for each truck to the private party value suggested on edumnds we find that the average asking price is 50% higher than the suggested price. If I was to list our vehicle at 50% above edmunds suggested price (in keeping with how others in the area are pricing their trucks) I would be listing it at $7,670 dollars.

This price sounds awfully high to me (though what do I know), but would I be foolish to list my vehicle at a lower price given how other sellers are listing theirs?

Are those ads with high asking price dealers or private sellers?

YOu should advertise your for $500 more than KBB Private Party value.

Or if you are prepared to wait 20498438338332982 days to sell it then list it for as high as you can think of.

Whenever I sell a car I always want to sell high (of course) so I list a bit above KBB and naturally time goes by and I lower my price. This method works fine. Two weeks at $500 above KBB then lower it by $500 for every 2 weeks that go by.

Thanks for the response, these are private sellers.

Sure NP. The main factor is time. If you have a lot then list $1000 over. Just don't be offended when someone like me asks you to justify the extra cash demand. If you are flexible and logical , willing to deal then it should be no problem.
