Putting the red bumper lenses to use

Borla Dual Exhaust
I couldn't help but notice the Borla Exhaust. I want to change from the stock muffler that exists straight out the back. When the windows are down, exhaust gas is sucked into the passenger compartment. The rotten egg smell the dealer says is caused by the gasoline may be just that. There is a law taking effect this spring that will make the gasoline compnies reduce the amount of sulphur.
Anyway, I have been wanting to change the muffler. The Borla site does not show a replacement. Also,, I had the 4Runner on a lift and could not figure out any way to route the tialpipe to the drivers side.

This is the coolest mod! The wiring and additional grounding wire were perfectly spec'd.
I chose to use a Dremel and hack the whole round end off so that I could mount the sockets properly. I also smeared Goop over all the holes that were left after mounting the sockets.
Goop works well. It dries fast and leaves a rubber solution that can be removed easily to change the bulbs. I have first hand knowledge of that as I forgot to install one of the bulbs! :bash:
Anyway, I took my time and did it right. All the wires for wrapped in that black spirly casing that is available everywhere. It's very clean and very cool! Here's some pics ...
Tip: Before installing, make sure you test the bulbs to identify the brake wire. It will be the brightest. As suggested earlier, ground wire to chassis and touch red battery post with one of the other wires. Good luck!

I haven't done a whole lot of investigating on this, but does anyone else think that the rear reflectors look to be exactly the same shape and size (albeit the color is different) as the front fog lights? Maybe the reds can be swapped with another set of clear ones from the front with red bulbs?
Like I said, not much thought put into this, just happened to notice as I was washing the beauty yesterday.

Haven't actually looked, but I'll bet they're not even close. The rear ones looks taller and not as wide.

Now I've got to check this myself.
I have some 3M clear covers that are cut exactly to the shape of the front fog lights...I'm going to see if they are the same shape. Remember, the front fog light area is composed of two separate pieces...I'm only talking about the inner fog light not the turn signal portion. I'll report back later today and maybe even with some photos.

WELL, I WAS WRONG. What can I say, you guys were right.Just throwing this out there, but has anybody thought of converting these reflectors into backup lights to give you more light when in reverse? I guess, since the lenses are red, this wouldn't be possible with the current ones. Does anyone know if they sell replacement clear lenses that could be used?
Any other thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I am looking at strobe sticks for this mod. I really like screwing with people that try to ride my ass. I finally got the nerve to do the reverse light trick, but not knowing what speed activates this, I am afraid to use it below freeway speeds.
My biggest concern is that the strobes will not be bright enough. I'm sure this mod is also illegal in all 50 states, FYI.

Hey, just got an 05 4Runner and wanted to make the rear bumber lenses functional. Great write-up but I have 2 questions...
First, how to I identify the lens vents? You mentioned taking them out but it's not obvious to me where they are...help, please?
Second, the socket I got has two leads a red lead and a black lead. If I only want to connect for the brake light and turn signal can I use the black lead as my ground wire?

They are little rubber caps on the back of the housing... simply pull them off.

Red is likely the stop lamp, and black is likely the signal. (but don't quote me) The socket exterior is ground, and since these lens housings don't have a ground on them, you'll need to solder a ground wire to the socket exterior as indicated in the instructions.
