Question about Runner AWD system

Im looking at getting an 08 or 09 runner with the awd and V8. What's the torque split and can I still lock the wheels to get actual 4x4? I've been looking for info but haven't seen the same thing twice.

All of the fourth gens have a locking center differential. When locked, it behaves just like a part-time system.

I am not trying to be rude, but there are TONS of posts explaining how the 4WD system works. Search ATRAC, or Locking Diff, things of that nature, there will be A LOT of reading for you!!

Split in Full-Time 4WD is 48% front / 52% rear, 50/50 with center diff locked (Part-Time 4WD). 4Lo can be used in both Full-Time and Part-Time. I love the versatility.

I thought that the Torsen-type center diff allowed for a range of transfer between front and rear drive-shafts... isn't that how it makes driving on high-traction surfaces (i.e- streets) possible? I didn't think that it was fixed.

yep. teh "transfer case" works more like a differential with a limited slip that you would find in an axle.

that may be true, but I believe that is what the "normal" split is. but, i'm not sure that the front/rear power is variable.

Lockable diff that is 60/40 rear/front torque split and can change within a range of 71/29 to 47/53.

ok, i stand corrected about the variability. but, i could have sworn i saw 48/52 somewhere.... could be wrong, i've been wrong before. :)

You probably did. I've seen slightly varying numbers. The exact numbers don't matter. 70/30 and 50/50 are used for Land Cruiser and there's no reason to think it's not the identical Torsen diff.

There is no normal split with this all wheel drive. If there is a slip or loss of traction power will transfer.

I found a write up and maybe that maybe some of you gear heads can understand. From what I can tell it is constatnly changing as needed. It may have set a few set points or ratios when things slip or don't but I don't think that there is jus one set point or ratio.

Not sure if all 4Runners have the T-3. But it is what the 4th generations have.
