Sorry, that was supposed to have said Maestro RR w/T01 harness (fixed) ... not Metra. The Maestro RR looks similar in size to the PAC PR4.2-TY11, so any advice is welcome.

Put it on top of the left air duct and route as much cabling into the square hole in the back of the cavity as possible.

I like it ... just getting that unit up and out of the way would be helpful. I'll give it a try this weekend when I tear everything apart again.

Go to the Crutchfield website and add the stereo to your cart, it will give you the options for install components.
It will also depend on if you want to add a Maestro or not. A bit of info regarding what trim level 4runner you have as well as what features you are looking for will also help.

What was said about Waze on CarPlay is absolutely true. I just installed an MVH-1400NEX and I’m loving it. I used the PAC RP4.2-TY11 and Metra kit. I jammed The RP on top of the left heater duct and stuck a bunch of the wires in the center channel cavity. I ran the included mic to the back of the mirror. I have plate bulb camera on it's way.

I did not have the JBL system as I have an SR5 with the standard radio. Not sure about Maestro rr and JBL integration. I did use the TO1 wire harness from Idatalink though. [MENTION=5149]riceandpho[/MENTION] may have more knowledge on this.

I can’t answer directly about the 4Runner JBL, but I just installed a Sony XAV-AX1000 in my daughter’s Camry which had JBL, and with the correct harness it integrated seamlessly. Works very well. As long as your amp and speakers are in good shape, I’d recommend going this route for a simple install. Obviously, if you’re a discerning audiophile, you would opt for removing everything, running new amps, speakers, wiring, subs, etc., but for most people just looking for a nice upgrade, this setup is great.

its do able, just need to have the right accessory kit from them, also you have to flash your module correctly, if your not comfortable doing it, it can brick it, so take it to a pro, but its simple to do if you take your time and know some basics with computers and electrical.

I used a PAC RP4.2-TY11 for integration with the JBL system.

Thanks to both of you ... my kit does line up with the factory bracket holes in the side of the head unit, I guess I just didn't move the trim kit far enough forward on the head unit. I tried to kind of "split the difference" in terms of how much of the trim kit is in front of the head unit faceplate and how much of it is behind ... looks like I should be lining up the top of the trim kit with the front of the faceplate (if that makes any sense). And I was probably more focused on trying to get the head unit to tilt back a little to better align with the trim.

Did you manage to get your adjusted to it sits farther back?

Here's a link to my back up camera install. It has a picture of my JVC head unit when I switched from JBL. I used a dremel to modify the plastic adapter that sits around the head unit so that I could position the stereo in just the right spot (so it wasn't recessed so far in and I could remove the faceplate which I never do). Don't get a JVC head unit though, not impressed and quickly out of date.

That looks a lot like mine. Buttons flush with the bottom so they're still usable. Too bad we can't get a little bit of tilt, but I think the manual said it has to be fairly level.

Just had a Pioneer AVH-1440NEX installed this last week. I wasn’t about to tear into all that myself.

I went with the RR Maestro to go along with it so I could utilize the JBL system still and to get some of those engine read outs through the stereo.

I also had them install a USB port right below the phone mount I have. This connects right to the stereo. The stereo has Bluetooth too, but the sound is noticeably better if it’s hooked up through the USB.

I’m very happy with everything. I’m actually amazed at how much better the JBL system sounds with this headunit. I feel like I replaced the speakers too, it’s a dramatic difference.

I installed a 4400 NEX in my girlfriend 03 with JBL and RDS and we retained all the factory steering wheel controls and everything. I used the Crux SWRTY-61J. It was weird installing it because we didn’t use one of the harnesses that originally plugged j to the radio, and we also didn’t use of the little antenna plugs. For the JBL, the SWC harness we got didn’t have rear left or rear right wires, so the front left and front right controlled everything so the wiring harness was a little weird to wire up too. Everything worked out great though. Getting it to all fit was a nightmare though. Also I would advice getting the bestkits dash kit because that fit way better than the metra 8210 that was recommended for our install.

Sounds like the PAC RP4.2-TY11 would've made it much simpler. I had zero issues installing my Pioneer MVH-1400NEX with my JBL system. Used all the factory plugs and all I did was insert a plug for steering wheel controls.

Good to know that you can stick with factory JBL speakers and just put in a modern multimedia head unit. I think I'd be happy with this.

Although I'd probably order everything from Crutchfield, they seem to select Maestro for integration.

The Maestro does offer more options and you have to have an iDatalink head unit (I think most decent ones are, mine is). I didn't care about having vehicle data on screen though. Funny thing is I'll probably pull all the JBL stuff out this summer anyhow. lol
