Ran out of gas.....with a Scangauge II

When mine runs out, it holds 18.7 gallons. The OP said he put 18.5 gallons in his total, so it's using the whole tanks. If yours is running out before that the pickup is probably screwed up. It definitely shouldn't run out with two gallons left in there if everything is working right.

My 2000 was exactly the same as my 99. Many people on here report almost the same exact kind of results. There's many threads about it. I remember it being one of the first "concerns" I had about the truck.

I only netted 17.5 gallons after the 2 from the small red tank, and then the 15.5 at the pump 10 minutes later.


I'm right there with you though Jeremy, with the 99-00 having the fuel sender issues. Now to investigate the details of said tsb...


Thank you to all who have helped me wrap my head around my own problems. I'll update this post (if I can remember) after a few more fillups to see if my correction % increases or decreases.

In my case it looks like I need the sending unit, and then to calibrate it. Some 4Runners needed a circuit board in the dash, but the issue there was that they were running out of fuel and the gauge still showed there was gas in the tank.

I've had a ScangaugeII for a couple of months now and only had to calibrate the % once, during the initial 2nd fill up procedure. I just filled up earlier this AM with "23 miles to empty" on display so if it's true that the last 2 gallons are unusable, I might have dodged a bullet since it took 16.6 gallons for the pump to auto shut off. When going thru the menus to reset, post fillup, I saw that it calculated I used 16.4 gallons since last fill up so it seems to be pretty accurate.

One reason for having unusable fuel is to protect the in-tank fuel pump from overheating. If every last drop can be used there'll be inadequate fuel for cooling the pump during the last 30 or so miles.
