Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Bone stock '18 TRD off-road with almost 12K miles. 18.2 mpg average.

2016 SR5 with about 600lbs extra weight and a 3” lift, 275/70/17 AT tires.

25,000 miles and never reset the mileage minder.

According to the onboard fuel economy reading: 15.5 lifetime

2017 with 27k miles on it. Stock everything except a Gobi rack/ladder, averaging 17.4mpg.

Just finished a 3200 mile trip from Southern California through Utah and into Colorado Springs and back.

On the trip collectively we averaged 16.7 MPG BUT that's with 5 humans, 1 dog, a cooler full of stuff, 2 aquatainers full of water, a drawer system, 4 bikes and a roof rack full of stuff for camping with a toddler and two other kids for 18 days.

We also have a C4 Fab low Pro bumber, C4 Sliders, Gobi Roof Rack and full RCI skids. I am still running the stock sized terra grapplers that came with my truck though so I am sure that is helping some.

Our best tank was a little over 18 MPG and our worst was 14.8.

Completely stock and about 60% highway doing between 65 to 75 mph . I don’t jack rabbit when light turns green . My average is 21.4

I recently crossed 15k miles and that seems to have been the wall for my MPG. I went from ~14.5-15 MPG to now 16.5-17 MPG with the same driving style. I am 50/50 city and highway with the occasional aggressive streak.

19-21 mostly city. I drive so that it stays above 20. Ie, I put it in neutral to coast to a stoplight. Don't run the air all the time. etc. Basically, I am playing a driving game it to keep it up there.

Edit - Only other thing I can think of is it's been uncharacteristically hot (upper 80's -mid 90's ) summer here = constant AC on while driving. I know that saps mileage to some degree but again have had hot summers in the past and never saw that low in my '06 sport.

Put a pound extra in the tires (up to 33 from 32) and am sweltering vs. using A/C to see what I can get it up to. So far, looks like maybe 14's but that is still not right. Nobody reading this has had mileage with stock Gen5 TRD rig this bad? I see mostly 16-20 with maybe a few outliers but nothing in the 13-14 as a default on a brand new rig.

Guess next stop would be Toyota corporate or dealer to check it out unless anyone has thoughts to share.

Gas Milage

I have a 2010 trail, all stock, and live in a rural area. I usually get 18-19mpg locally and 21+ on the highway. Be careful of tires, I got good mileage with the original tires, then went to Goodyear off road tires with kevlar (very heavy) and reduced my mileage about 2 mpg. I immediately changed to Firestone Destination all terrain and I get the 18-19/21+mpg. I always check mileage with a pencil/calculator, but I have found the car computer to be very close.

Started a road trip with 1039 km. on my new 18 Limited arrived home with 6132 km. on the dial. So 5093 km. with a fully loaded vehicle (benchrest gear)
Computer says 11.l. per 100 or 21.383 mpg. Hand calculated 10.81 l. per 100
21.76 mpg. Computer checks out pretty well. Time for my first oil change.

2. Sacrifice comfort by turning off the AC. Many of my best tank readings have been with the AC on.

AC these days provides less drag than open windows. All my 22MPG tanks have been with AC in super hot weather (I also won't sacrifice comfort!).

I dunno. Here in the West, Prius drivers are often the fastest craziest ones on the hwy.

Really hoping it's something about the short trip start and stop nature of my driving so far (I have a really short commute to work and maybe doesn't have chance to warm up all the way) or something about the break-in miles stuff although I'm thinking that's mostly minor and shouldn't account for being 5 mpg off the low end of the range.

Today I am resetting everything, filling up and taking pancake flat freeway trip in ideal eco driving conditions for 150 miles to see what happens. If I can't get above 17MPG doing this then it's to the dealer I guess to hook up the computer (BUMMER). I've read there can be problem with oxygen sensor or fuel injectors that can cause bad mileage and I'd sure want to figure that stuff out sooner than later if that is the problem.

there's most likely nothing wrong w/ your truck.. you probably need to adjust your driving style and/or commute.. the a/c is heavily parasitic as well. All the dealer is going to do is try to pull codes which they won't find anything.. if that is your 4runner in the avatar then those mods are probably why you have poor mpg.. try bumping your tire psi up
