Cali is the least free state of them all. Looks like everything gives you cancer, car parts are illegal, Gas prices leave you butt hurt and, now you can only own toy guns.

Hey btw... are you guys even allowed to get mail in Cali? or is that illegal too?

I lived in Juneau for several years and never even heard of someone carrying a rifle in a bank, store, etc., let alone saw anyone doing it, so I'm curious as to how this ultra-casual regard to weapon carriage came about (and when).

I can't even think of a scenario where someone would carry a rifle in a bank there, anyway: there's not a ton of big game hunting in a town landlocked by glaciers, nor is there any hunting I can think of that's within walking distance of a bank.

Maybe they're going after "predatory lenders" or they had a tag to shoot in a "bear market."

Oh man do I crack me up; bring on the nerd herd humor.

The only thing I agree with is that list is that you should be licensed to own a weapon. I figure it this way; you need to be licensed to drive a vehicle, meaning you've shown a knowledge of operation & safety of the vehicle (granted not many people seem to know that... But it is the purpose of the license) so anyone who wants to own and use a weapon should have to do the same.

I believe that when you purchase a weapon as part of your cool off period (does it really have to be 10 days though... ) you have to take and pass a safety & training course that teaches you proper use, safety, tactics, and other things like what to do in case of a misfire/jam, how to react if you're house has been invaded, ect. I believe that gun control is "using both hands," and that REAL gun control is knowing how to properly and safely utilize the tool you have.

That being said... I am absolutely 100% against them taking my guns and/or limiting the magazines & type of weapon allowed. My parents lived in Romania when it was part of the USSR and they risked their lives to raise me in the US in a country free from police states and rampant Stalinism. The government serves the people, the people do not serve the government and when you allow the government to have more power than the people you open a door to a great many things that are not all good.

Freakonomics authors talk about the danger of guns from a statistical perspective ... I found it interesting. For example given the population of the US and the # of guns in the US, the ratio of 1 gun to a homicide/suicide is such that each gun takes a life every 10,000 years.

Now obviously the ratios are different in certain areas like Chicago for example, but when taken as a whole, the lack of violence across the US is significant in this debate.

Listen to this podcast, linked above. BTW, these guys are not super conservative they are just Economics professors and their show is played on NPR weekly.

Now another great Podcast that really exposes the major need for something to be done about poverty, gang and drug violence in US urban cities is this two episode special from This American Life. They embed Journalists for two months in a South Chicago school and bring the stories of students out who deal with gun violence on a daily basis (none of which is from assault weapons btw).
