Thanks Saker, do you think there is enough meat on that plug to punch two holes? I have a TRD OffRoad so I want to run a dedicated line for the E-locker.

Stumbled across this thread after recently submerging the rear axle in some muddy waters. The diff had been splashed with several water crossings a few minutes prior but the last was a complete submersion.
Wondering if changing the rear diff fluid is recommended? Thanks to this site I found a thread and it's pretty easy to do. And should it be done right away or can I wait a couple months?

just inspect it, but i doubt one water crossing did anything
i went ahead and replaced mine at 30k miles since i had a credit at the dealership, it looked fine and i've had loads of water crossings

I did at least 30 water crossings before I installed the breather, some of which were way over the diff. I had zero signs of water in the differential. If you're really worried you can check the fluid and see if it shows signs of water infiltration (milky).

Does anyone have updated images from the install into gas cap compartment and how to access it? The pictures form the third party host are no longer showing up... I will attempt go in blind just by write up if not no worries.

I actually did a slight variation on what other folks did. I routed the diff and e-locker breathers up on top of the fuel filler pipe all the way to the area just behind the fuel filler chamber, up at the top of the left rear wheel well. I didn't feel comfortable cutting up the rubber and plastic that is supposed to keep the "outside water" from becoming the "inside water", but I wanted it to be as high as possible. This part of the wheel well is covered by a plastic splash shield, and the area actually seems to be a lot cleaner than under the fuel filler door. It did take some fanagling with a small 12-point socket (I think it was around 10mm) to release the plastic panel clips from behind.

You unclip the splash shield, run the breather tubes up along the filler pipe as high as they will go, secure with zip-ties, then button the splash shield back on.
Can anyone tell me what thread size is on the factory installed rear diff breather? I want to get a hose barb fitting of the same size.
I'm surprised that Toyota did not relocate the breather to a "higher ground". My old 98 Grand Cherokee has breather tubes for both axles, transmission and the transfer case relocated to keep water out of the axles. I have done a lot of deep water crossings without any issues. Several spots were at least 2 ft deep.
