Rearview camera mod WITH NAV

You were able to make the camera work but you didn't isolate the circuit. The truck "thinks" it's in reverse but it "knows" it's not. The resulting confusion is causing the dash to light up.

Ok yea that basically confirms what I was thinking. Thanks a lot for the help! Now I will go try to find the right diode....

Take a trip to Baynesville Electronics on Joppa Rd and tell one of them to get you a 1/4 W Diode. Cost you like 2 bucks...

Been there several times, good place. I was around a radio shack today though in bel air and picked up a pack of 2 12V Diodes (specifically they are radio shack brand, model lN4742A - 12V Zener Diode) for $1.50. Wired it in just like in my diagram (paying close attention to the direction it was facing of course) and BAM. it works perfectly.

Gotta love diodes- I have 2 in my left rear brake light to make it into a euro fog lamp when it's nasty out. Works awesome!
 
I got my OTRATTW SPDT switch and will be preforming this over the weekend on a 2013 Entune w/ Nav, the G18 plug looks to be the same. I will be preforming this mod from the back of the head unit using this diagram posted by deekoi.

Out of curiosity did you pull your head unit already and verify that the plug is exactly the same on the entune unit? I have my 2012 entune w/ nav unit out and I see no such gray plug so I was wondering if maybe they changed it on the 2013...as a matter of fact there is not a single gray plug to be found back there :p

As far as any tips, all I can offer is remember to disconnect the battery before chopping into the harness and test to make sure all is working before buttoning it back up :) Good luck on the wiring!

Why are you using a Zener? A Zener is a voltage regulator diode. It limits current flow to it's knee voltage, which in this case is 12V.

:shrug: umm, no I haven't pulled it yet personally. I looked at this http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/117048-pictures-back-entune-radio.html and assumed it was the same ?
 
Now eddiebx has got me thinking here, I was assuming it was the same across the board for all 4Runners with a back-up cam. This 13 model is starting to piss me off more and more and wish I had went with a 2012....

I think the only way to find out without subscribing to TIS for an updated wiring diagrams is sitting there and measuring each wire with a DMM while moving the shifter into reverse...are you volunteering? :boink:

I've been meaning to figure out which wire/plug it is, but too much in my interior is taken apart so I can't even hook up the battery yet, I've had my SPDT switch sitting and ready to go for over a month already, haha

I will certainly update if/when I do successfully complete this task though.

I would of really like to get this done over the weekend :redbrick:. I see you can get a TIS subscription for only 2 days at $15, that is not bad. If I do that, can I save the pic/file and make it viewable here? Because more than likely I still wouldn't be able to figure out the diagram, schematics are not my expertise :moping:.

(side note, I hoped to do the "always on party mod" as well, is this different on this F'n chit as well? )

I subscribed to TIS for 2 days and saved each section as a PDF. It wasn't easy, there isn't a master index, no links to other sections. I forget the sequence but it can be done.

Ok, I did a bit of probing around in my car with a DMM and I've come down to this conclusion (note, this is based off a 2012 TE w/ entune nav, but I'd imagine that it should be pretty similar for all entune nav units).

I am about 90% certain that the below picture is the correct plug and pins you need to splice into for the rear camera mod, but of course my car is not operational so I can't verify these pins during actual operation.

I did however used the 2010 EWD posted by Nashman as a guide to tracing the wires at different junction points throughout the vehicle and this is how I deduced the pin layout depicted below.

It appears that most of the wiring harnesses are pretty similar between the 2010 and 2012 models throughout the vehicle, and only some wires were moved around to accommodate newer components.

The plug you are looking for is a 28 pin white plug, it should be pretty much self explanatory because this is the only plug back there that looks like this.

Once you've located this plug and before proceeding to cut and splice, could you please take a DMM and verify that the blue wire is a switched +12v ignition signal (which goes on and off with the ignition switch) and that the red wire is a switched +12v reverse signal (which goes on when the gear is placed into reverse)?

If the signals on each pin turn out to be correct according to your DMM, then the rest of the mod should be smooth sailing from there...(1) cut the red wire, (2) connect the nav end of the red wire to center pole of the SPDT, (2) connect the harness end of the red wire to one of the switched poles of the SPDT, (3) don't cut and just tap into the blue wire and connect that to the remaining switched pole of the SPDT.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think it seems like we should be in good shape?

If I beat you to this mod, I will of course update this thread, but please note that I work at a snail's pace when it comes to all things car related so don't hold your breath :p

I can successfully confirm " IT WORKS", this for a 2013 with Entune Nav.

All credit goes to Eddie on this one, I was just the first to hook it up.
