Recommendations for a portable camping BBQ?

I bought the $50 Coleman off of Amazon and while it is great for burgers or fish it doesn't have a lot of head room and if I try to put a chicken breast with the bone on the grill I can't shut the lid.

I'm interested to know if there are any good options that are both portable and reasonable in price.

Check out the Weber Q series. It's similar to the Coleman, but it has a round lid vs. the flat style of the Coleman.

I have one of the weber q grills. It works great! I've had it for about 4 years, and the burner was acting up and paint coming off the lid and bottom. They sent me out brand new stuff under warranty and basically made it a new grill. Webers customer service is amazing

I appreciate the advice. One slight problem for me is that the Q series Weber is easily 4x bigger in storage volume / size than the cheap Coleman.

I'd really love to find something 1.5x the size of the Coleman. It just needs to be able to fit two half chicken breasts, with bone.

The one you do NOT want is a Coleman "Road Trip". Cool design, good size, nice carrying case..

And flat impossible to clean.

Are you sure you are looking at the right Weber Q. I have the 200 series which although considered portable, it is rather big to transport.

But the 100/1000 series is only a few square inches bigger than the one you posted here at 189 sq in.

I was gonna recommend this one, but it sounds like it's a little bigger than what you're looking for. My parents gave me their old one which is probably 25 years old now and it still works fine, just a little beat up. The only downside has a been a few times where getting it starting in wind was a bit of a pain. But for the price it's great.

I have a Weber Q 2000, which is good but frankly, not great. It's ok with headroom but I find the flame too weak to generate decent grill marks. We bought this for portability as it is stowed at our winter home down south.

The one I would recommend is Cabela's Stainless Steel model: Cabela's Stainless Steel Tabletop Grill : Cabela's

I picked it up on sale last summer (on sale again, now!). It's very well made. I've left mine outdoor since I got it (rain and snow, I live in Toronto). It heats up nicely and gets plenty hot for serious grilling. We've taken it camping three times and it's performed like a champ.

When it's just me and the wife for a meal, I actually prefer firing up the little Cabela's grill rather than using our regular big grill.

to make it be able to use regular propane tanks rather than the small ones?

I'm surprised yours doesn't get hot enough. I can easily get mine to 450-500 or so which should be plenty hot for cooking

I actually love my road trip, but I agree it is a PITA to clean. It works great for skinny items like dogs, burgers, steaks, corn, etc...and with the swap out griddle it makes great pancakes, quesadillas, grilled cheese, and other griddle friendly items. However, it is no Bueno for a chicken on the bone!

If it runs on the green propane canisters you can buy an adapter hose that will tie into a 20 lb tank. I have a slightly different adapter that attatched to my HP propane outlet on my PUP that ties into the green canister location: works well.

Yes, I picked up an adapter for, the local hardware store so I can run it off a 20lb tank at home.

It gets hot enough for cooking, but not hot enough to put a nice sear for grill marks on steaks. I also find that the heat is not evenly distributed enough across the grill. I like it, but it's not worth twice th price of the cabelas unit.

Use your current grill with a foil tent. Carry some foil with you and use it when extra room is needed.

I use to carry with a Ducane "Take It or Leave It" gas grill, but that was heavy and big. Cast iron lid would take too long to cool down. These were made when Ducane was Ducane, not Weber.

I switched this year to a Holland "Companion" Grill. It much lighter and smaller, also cools down really quick since its stainless steel.

Both of these were pricey, but they do a really good job.

Also bought at the beginning of summer this year a Nexgrill gas grill, but I returned it in favor of the better built Holland grill.

I'm a fan of cooking on charcoal when I camp and have been happy with the Weber Go-Anywhere grill. It's held up really well and is great to cook on.

The only thing that sucks about charcoal bbq is that you usually cant use them during a burn-ban.
